1v1, 2v2, & 3v3 to Goal (25 mins)

1v1 Defend to Goal

-First defender starts at the top corner of 6 yard box and drive ball into attacker on the corner of 18 yard box. 1v1 to goal. If defender wins it they go to counter goal.

- Play 2-3 minutes and switch roles & switch sides.

Progression (add 2v2 & 3v3)

2) Have attackers back up and start deeper. Have second defender start diagonally opposite to come and defend. What should they do? Cover. What should the first defender do? (Press or delay). Second defender can only start when attacker touches the ball.

3) Now we introduce a third defender and Attacker. Game starts in a 1v1 then 2v2 and then culminates with 3v3 with everyone staying on.

*Can also choose to go directly into 3v3 game.

Coaching Points:

Defenders:

Where should defender's be forcing? Defenders should work on curving their runs and forcing them wide. When they are outnumbered, they need to delay the play and wait for cover. Communciation & Defensive shape.

Attackers:

need to drive at front foot when going 1v1. When a man up, need to go quickly, make runs and find space.

3v2 - 2v2 Transition Game

Coach may need to restart the balls if necessary.

Play 3v2 to Goal. Once ball is finished, the defending team attack 2v2. The player on Yellow that touches the ball last will exit the field.

Coaching Points:

- After attacking can we transition quickly and get pressure/support on the ball?

- Where do we want to force the game (middle, wide)?

- Goalkeeper should be given constant instructions to help defenders.

- What specific situations do we not want to get in?

-

8v6 Pressing (25 mins)

8v6 High Pressure: (25 min.)

- Pressing team scores 1 point per disruption, 3 for a goal

- Build out team scores 1 point per goal on small goals

- GK + Back 4 + MF 3 are building out

- Front 3 + MF 3 defending

- Balls can start with coach at halfline serving or goal kicks

Objectives:

1) Close down with INTENSITY first!

2) Make the space as small as possible (look at and read the most dangerous to take proper angles/distance)

3) Win the ball back or disrupt play.

Coaching Points:

- Immediate transition, no time to dwell on disapointment of losing possession.

- Go ALL OUT and close down with INTENSITY first!!!

- The last 2 yards of closing down defines everything (real pressure), but controlled with anticipation of the next pass.

- Wingers should try to force inside, but if they can't, then MF 3 must work hard to shift wide together

- First player can always block 2 attackers by closing the line, then the ball carrier, and checking over their shoulder.

- If late and unable to challenge for the ball, use proper technique with small steps to adjust and cover the largest lane possible, forcing to teammate.

- Read and identify the most dangerous space as the second defender and communicate to teammate closing down... "Force left! Go, go GO!"

- Take proper angle, distance, and timing to close that most dangerous space

- Teammates should be reorganizing as a group constantly and quickly.

Build Out: GKs, Garvey, Louie, Max, Baca, Logan, Elias, Edgard, Berlint, Thomas

Pressing: Chris, Dylan, Chico, Eddie, Ivan, Kieran, Eddie

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization: Space is 30-35 x 18. Play with 6 on each team plus GKs. There are starting positions at each endline where players start from. Balls are located at the opposite corner of the grid and play will always start there. This exercise incorporates rest when the players are waiting to step on, so games of 5-7 minutes are appropriate. Play at least 2/3 games, switch the location of the balls to the opposite side in second interval.

Instructions: Red starts with the ball and runs on the field with a ball, at the same time blue steps out to defend and prevent a shot. This initiates the 3v3 duel. If Red shoots and scores or shoots and the ball goes off the endline, they stay for the next duel and a new blue team of 3 runs on with a ball to attack. Thus, a new 3v3 duel with the same Red. If Blue takes the ball from Red and shoots and scores or misses, a new Red 3 run on with the ball. Basically, anytime the ball crosses the opposing endline, the defending 3 are off and a new 3 from that same team run on with a ball. If the ball crosses the sideline, the appropriate team (quickly) takes a throw-in.

This exercise should be very fast and should become (by design) chaotic There is a demand for players to think and react to the rules as they happen fast, but to also step out and close down space. The attacking team is so close to goal that if the defenders give them any space, there is room to shoot, which means the defenders are likely to have to step off. Many 1v1 duels. Opportunity for attacking players to create and score, demand for all players to defend and support to prevent shots and goals. High physical intensity and high competitiveness must be balanced to eliminate injuries. Player safety: We are indoor on artificial turf today there is a "no slide tackle" rule, all players must stay on feet. This also encourages proper defending and moving feet.

Coaching Points:

1) Pressure & communication by 1st Defender (Instant transition // when out of possesion)

2) Body position and shape from 1st Defender (Force the direction of play // into trap)

3) Visual Cues 3B's (Bad Touch, Bad Pass, Bad Player (contain // tackle)

4) Support from 2nd (cover) Defender (double-team // set trap)

5) High Press, Counter Press and Rest Defense

Progressions:

1) Can only score off a cross 2) Can only score off a volley from a cross
