Free Dribble (15 mins)

Organisation:

• Set up the playing area as shown below

• Each student has a ball

• Dribble the ball around the playing area without touching a cone, another ball,

or another player.

• On signal ‘Change’, exchange your ball with another player and continue

dribbling

Modify:

  • Use only the inside of either foot
  • Use only the outside of either foot
  • Use the inside or outside of either
  • foot
  • Dribble slowly, dribble quickly
  • Dribble the ball in different
  • patterns: zig zag, circular,
  • rectangular

No Mans Land (10 mins)

Organisation:

  • 4 players with a ball are on a side each of a small square marked by cones.
  • 1 defenders stands in the middle of the area.
  • The attackers look to dribble to another side of the grid.
  • 1 point for going to either side, 3 points for dribbling across the area.
  • The defender can only tackle once an attacker is inside the grid.
Modify:
  • Add a second defender.
  • Only allow points for crossing the square (one side to the opposite).

Attacking KP's:
  • Soft touches on approach
  • Big touches to get past defender
  • Change of speed/direction
  • Head up - awareness

Defending: 
  • Jockey stance
  • 'Fast to slow' & 'High to low'

Side on 1v1 (15 mins)

Organisation:

  • Coach plays into the area and two players compete to win the ball.
  • The player who wins the ball has to turn and dribble side gate.
Modify:
  • Put in mini-goals instead of gates.
Attacking Key Points:

  • Soft touches to get around defender
  • Big touches to get away from defender
  • Player with head up
  • Change of speed & direction to create space.
  • Shielding the ball
Defending:
  • 'High to low' & 'Fast to slow' as you approach the ball
  • 'Surfer' pose, side on, bent knees
  • Eyes on the ball

Transition:
  • Quick reaction to winning/losing the ball

4v4 4 Goal Game (20 mins)

Organisation:

  • 4v4 Small Sided Game
  • Option is to play winner stays on or both teams go off once a score/time limit is reached. (Max time 2 mins for players being inactive)

Modify:

  • Make 2v2/3v3

Attacking KP's:

  • Quality Passing - Timing, Weight, Accuracy (+10 years)
  • Soft touches - control
  • Big touches - to go past the defender
  • Change of speed/direction to beat opponent
  • Movement to Receive (+11 years)
  • Playing with head up - scanning

Defending KP's:

  • Delay
  • Show away from goal
  • Pressing - who, why, where
  • Cover & balance - teammates
  • 'High to low' & 'Fast to slow' 'jockey'

Transition KP's:

  • Quick Reaction to winning/losing possession
  • Can we regain possession quickly (defenders)?
  • Can we play forward and score quickly (attackers)?

Questions:

  • Where could I stand to support my teammate on the ball if he is under pressure?
  • When we are attacking, do we want to make the pitch big or small (and why?)?
