Description

Based upon 'Progress and Penetrate' players will look to eliminate units and individuals by switching the point of attack. 1.Can we provide width and depth2.Can we look to play forward first3. Is there an across field switch available? (Switch)4. Can we play around them using the deepest lying player and out to the other side (Switch)

Session Rationale

This session will be based around switching the point of attack. Switching the play can be defined as 'Progressive and Penetrative Play', as the team is in possession in order to create goalscoring by taking out opposition players through progressive passes. The FA (2019) define this as "Penetrative play is used to eliminate opposition players from the game by moving the ball between and beyond individuals or units into areas of the pitch in which goal-scoring opportunities can be created". As this session will be based around switching the point of attack, the players involved will be looking to break down the opposition by switching the play.

Pitch Set-Up

-Looking to use a 60x40 grid to allow for optimal space and encourage more success of 'Switching the point of attack', (However if the pitch being used cannot allow for a 60x40 then adjust the pitch by the space of your area)

-Pitch will be set out as showcased above with the pitch being split into three zones based down the pitch rather than the across. This will be specifically used within the conditioned aspect of the session.

Equipment

-Cones

-Flat disc markers

-12 Balls

-2 Goals

-Tactical Whiteboard

-5x2 sets of coloured bibs

Health and Safety

-Risk assess area's used, internal/external of session

-Eliminate any risks that occur during session

Switching the point of attack

Firstly, I will set up the session prior to activity to ensure that the practice is ready for players to start straight away.

Then I will introduce the practice focus outlining 'Switching the point of attack' and that the 5 pillar focus would be based around Technical/Tactical output.

I will then place bibs in a pile and ask teams to set up in a formation that they feel will suit the basis of the topic. This will be throught the use of empowerment. Kidman (2001) defines empowerment in coaching as; An empowerment approach to coaching emphasises an athlete-centred approach rather than a traditional prescriptive (or autocratic) style of coaching. The athlete-centered approach promotes a sense of belonging, as well as giving athletes a role in decision making and a shared approach to learning. Therefore, by empowering learners this should promote collaboration between players to decide upon a formation that will be successful for their team. Also, by including this it allows myself as the coach to begin to understand their tactical knowledge based around the subject.

Timescale: 1 Minute

For the first 2 minutes of the session the players will have no conditions set upon them as I wish for them to experiment and get used to the focus of the session.

However, I will implement a challenge from the start

Challenge: can you try to create as many opportunities to score through a switch in play... Show Me

By asking players to 'Show Me' this is a very open comment which should prompt players to perform switches in play from their own technical ability, Furthermore this will allow the coach to assess performances and judge players needs.

Timescale - 2 Minutes

Tactical

Intervention 1 - Tactical Pillar

After the 2 minutes is up, I shall make my first intervention based around the tactical pillar, I shall do this by gathering everybody around the tactical whiteboard. This will be based around encouraging formations to display Width as well as Depth to their play. Therefore, by having Width and Depth to their formations it will allow players to make accessible switches in possession for them to 'Progress and Penetrate', by having depth to their formation this provides the first trigger in trying to play into the forward first. (Which I will discuss in Intervention 2).

Within this section, I shall be using tactical questioning in order to provoke and promote good tactical knowledge and learning. Kidman (2001) highlights the importance of tactical questioning as; Questions that call for decision making and problem solving with respect to the strategies of the competition are tactical questions.

Players should look now to implement a (1)-1-2-1 formation which should see them progress and penetrate through the use of width and depth within the topic.

Timescale: 30 Seconds

As they are playing, it is important to recognise who is doing what. So E.G if the deepest player is advancing forward or getting in line with the two wide players then I shall perform a Fly By,

Fly by: Positional Specific based around players who are braking down the elements of width and depth. This will be through a reciprical approach to dealing with the player. Jones and Bailey (2011) suggests this approach as; "A mutual trust in social relations is generated and expanded as individuals, through reciprocation, confirm themselves worthy of further credit."

Timescale: 2 Minutes

Technical Point 1

As the width and Depth has been spoken about, I shall use my next intervention to speak about the types of switches we shall be looking at. The first switch will be based upon a long pass that is used to avert the point of attack from one side of the pitch to the other. The other will be based upon how we can use the deepest lying player to play in to go out as highlighted above.

1. Across field switch

2. Using the deepest player to go around.

Target: If you can score through both types of switches then you will be rewarded with 5 extra goals.

Timescale : 1 Minute

After using this intervention I shall be observing play in order to allow players to try these different styles. When using the coaching process, I will use a player to demonstrate the technique in order to empower learners to take further control of their learning. Thus, promoting the work of Bandura (1971) who defined the social learning theory by; "In the social learning system, new patterns of behaviour can be acquired through direct experience or by observing the behaviour of others."

Condition/Scaffolding

After diagnosing and using the coaching process on the previous technical outcome, I shall now be using a conditon, to benefit players further.

Condition: The team without possession can only defend in the 2 zones that are ball side

Team in possession can use all 3 zones.

This will be based around scaffolding pedagogy, this will allow players to figure out ways in solving problems through the help of the scaffolding, and by helping themselves. Potrac et al (2016) suggests by using zone of proximal development it will develop players by; Thought of as comprimising three inter-related phases. These are (a) assistance by others, (b) transition from other assistance to self assistance, and (c) assistance by the self.

Through this, players will be able to use the 2 switches more effectively due to the opposition becoming compact and narrow within the zones of the pitch.

1. Players should identify different ways of 'Progressing and Penetrating' the opposition through switches.

2.Players should identify with tactical intervention by always supplying width. - if not this will be done through a Drive by and Fly By

Timescale: 4 Minutes

Take out the scaffolding and condition to allow players to freely use the area of the pitch to 'progress and penetrate' by switching the point of attack.

Any Interventions shall be done by the use of an Drive by/Fly By

Debrief again shall use tactical questioning, and AfL techniques such as: PPPB, Pair and Share etc.
