Coaching Points:Principles of Defense for 6/8/10 (pink): Pressure // Cover // Balance.
WHO: 6/8/10 protecting back line and connecting to attacking unit.
WHAT: Line of Confrontation = The line of the field that we don't want the ball to cross, usually just above the shooting zone or 10 yards above the penalty box.
WHEN/WHERE: When defending in middle third.
WHY: Keeping the ball in the middle third protects the defensive line and the goal. Forcing lateral/negative passes protects that line of confrontation and allows time to shift/transition players from weak to strong side while forcing the possessing team to make decisions.
THE BIG PICTURE: Draw a line on the field that you won't let the ball cross. Ahead of this we are forcing negative play and stepping into opportunistic balls with strong P/C/B from 6/8/10 so we can snatch up the ball and play into our own attack. In this larger field and team format, being aware of the attacking flank players is now the responsibility of the 2/3.
**Let the players play with very little intervention for the last 20 minutes, allow for the game to punish and reward good play and choices.**
