Specific (10 mins)

Set up:

  • Area Size: Half Pitch
  • Player Numbers: 15 Players

Objective:

  • Prevent the opponents from building out of the back and create goal scoring chances.

Explanation:

  • The Red Team is the In Possession team and they will always start with the ball through their GK, while the blue team will be the Out of Possession team.

Rules:

  • Ball always restarts with Red Team
  • No throw ins or goal kicks

KeyPoints: In Possession

  • Keeping the width of the field
  • Movement to create space for oneself/teammate
  • Committing players to break lines / create an overload

Key Points: Out of Possession:

  • Angle and timing of strikers press to force the IP team out wide
    • Using sideline as an extra defender
  • Protecting the middle and shifting the team over to force play wide
  • Recognizing triggers to press & winning the ball high (side-lines & corners)

Walkthrough:

  • Red Team play out to CB, I will then coach how the striker can go and press the CB to push out wide, and how the midfielders can close the space that the striker is leaving open on his press. CB will then be forced to play wide where Blue Team winger puts immediate pressure on ball and I will show how the opposite winger tucks in. Attacking player can't play forward so he plays back to CB, and then that is a trigger to press and win the ball back in the corner. Blue team wins the ball back and starts a counter.

Progressions:

  • How midfielders can recover if striker gets beat by center back driving into the midfield. Wingers tuck in aggressively to prevent anything being played through the middle and force ball out wide. To have them recognize damage control and to not have one line breaking pass/dribble, become two through the middle.

Targets:

  • IP: Score in the mini goals
    • Wide Channels —› 1 point
    • Middle Channel —› 2 points
  • OOP: Counter and score in the big goal within 10"

Challenges:

  • Winning Possession in a wide channel
  • Scoring 10" after winning possession = 2 points

Conditions:

  • Adding channels to help players recognize field width and occupying spaces (OOP Team occupying on 2 of 3 channels to encourage staying compact)

SSG (10 mins)

Set up:

  • Area Size: Half Pitch
  • Player Numbers: 16 Players

Objective:

  • Prevent the opponents from building out of the back and create goal scoring chances.

Explanation:

  • SSG with two teams trying to score in the opposition's big goal.

Rules:

  • Normal match rules apply. Coach may sometimes call a team to start with the ball if ball goes out of play.

KeyPoints: In Possession

  • Keeping the width of the field
  • Movement to create space for oneself/teammate
  • Committing players to break lines / create an overload

Key Points: Out of Possession:

  • Angle and timing of strikers press to force the IP team out wide
    • Using sideline as an extra defender
  • Protecting the middle and shifting the team over to force play wide
  • Recognizing triggers to press & winning the ball high (side-lines & corners)

Walkthrough:

  • OOP team pressing the CB's with 2 strikers (man for man) while still forcing the play out wide. Strikers stay narrow and wait for GK to play out wide. Strikers then create an angled press forcing CB out wide while the other ST goes close to opposite CB preventing the switch. Strikers pressing the ball carrier needs to work hard to prevent the CB from taking advantage of the gaps left in behind.

Progressions:

  • Recognizing when the best time for a press might be… if the positioning of the CB is flat. Allows for a two striker partnership to take advantage of the IP team not occupying well the space when building out of the back, and increases the chance of the Strikers being able to force the IP team into a tight spot or to force them into a mistake/play long.

Targets:

  • IP & OOP: Score in the big goals
    • Wide Channels —› 1 point
    • Middle Channel —› 2 points

Challenges:

  • Winning Possession in a wide channel
  • Scoring 10" after winning possession = 2 points

Conditions:

  • Adding channels to help players recognize field width and occupying spaces (OOP Team occupying on 2 of 3 channels to encourage staying compact)
