Defending the Switch of Play

In this session, I will be looking at defending the switch of play in a 433 vs a 443

The team I will be focusing on is the Red team.

For the Red team, I have taken away the back $ and for the Blue team I have taken away the the front 3

Session Aim

Stop the Switch of play

Coaching Points

- Player Positioning

- Body Shape

- Pressing Angles

- Timings

Coaching Style:

I will use walkthroughs to show the solutions so the players have a visual example of what the solutions look like and the different ways we can achieve them.

I will use concurrent coaching throughout the session to give individual feedback to certain players who look like they're struggling.

I will use terminal coaching when I am giving out the main bulk of information for example if I am giving the solution to the problem I will stop the session and bring the red team in for a quick chat to tell them the solution to the problem.

Timings

This main practice will be 20 minutes in total.

Block 1:

The first block will be 5 minutes with a 1-minute break and in this block, it is going to be free play for the first 30 sec and then I will introduce problem 1 and solution 1.

Block 2:

in block 2 I will start to introduce problem 2 and the high press and then introduce solution 2.

Block 3:

this block will be 6 minutes and will have a 1- minute water break at the end before the small-sided game and in this block, we will have free play and I will look to solve any other issues we may come across.

SSG:

The small-sided game will be 15 minutes long with little intervention and I will observe if they have taken in any information from the main session and I will look to intervene when there is a big problem that needs dealing with.

The small-sided game will be 15 minutes long with little intervention and I will observe if they have taken in any information from the main session and I will look to intervene when there is a big problem that needs dealing with.

Problem 1

The way the press has been set will be a problem as the 9 will have to press the 5 and 6 which will make it very hard to press and win the ball, so the problem is that there will always be a spare CB to receive the ball and drive into the space which will then lead to a midfielder stepping forwards and will then leave a spare man free in the middle of the pitch.

Problem 2

In problem 2 the opposite full back will look to invert to create a central overload and as they receive the ball one of the midfielders will go wide and give the red midfielders a tough choice to make.

SSG

I have kept the pitch size the same to maintain a lot of realism. I have kept the objectives the same for both teams, but I won't coach as much as I would like to see how much information the players have retained and if things aren't going well I will step in and re-coach the points before or handle any new problems that may occur. I will keep motivating and keep relaying the message of stopping the switch of play.

Press

Solution 1

So for the press now what the Red team will look to do is have the Front Three narrow in to the width of the 18yard box and as the ball is played out to the 6 the 9 will run in a straight line and force the 6 to play wide and as that happens the 7 will drop in and close down the 5, and as the ball travels to the 2 the 11 will press the 2's back foot to force the blue team to play back into the pressure, the 2 red midfielders will stay on the outside shoulders of the 4 and 8 this is because we can intercept if it a poor pass but we can  also look to force them back towards their own goal.

If the Blue Team do manage to switch to the opposite full back in a game we will have our full back jump and apply pressure to the Blue fullback.

please see next image for the shape.

Problem 2

In Problem 2 the Red 4 will naturally press the 3 if they receive the ball to stop them from playing out and as that happens the Blue 8 will make a run out wide to help the switch of play.

Solution 2

For solution 2 the reds will not press and they instead will sit off and shuffle as the blues look to play out. if the 3 inverts the red 7 will be able to cut off the passing lane forcing the ball to go to the spare CB but still is able press from the front if the ball gets to the 3 which also allows the red 4 to follow the blue 8 if they do go wide to try switch play.

if  a blue centre half steps forwards the 9 will look to apply pressure and stop them from switching play.

SSG

I have added a goalkeeper for the reds and put in a big net to create a bit more realism but the Blue team still have the advantage as I would like for us to be able to defend the switch of play with the disadvantage.
