Function: Organisation/set up (20 mins)

Organisation:

* Both teams in an 11v11 match will be playing a 4-4-2 formation.

* Pitch size: length 70 yds > edge of centre circle with left channel not in play for purpose of the function & width = edge of 18 yd box to opposite touch line.

* 1 full size goal at defending end + target box at opposite end 15x10 with coach as trigger to play and target during session (10 balls behind target zone)

RED attacking team who i will coach for function > SSG will be set up as 2 ch's > RFB > 2 x CM players with wide right and 2 centre forwards > LB & wide left players as manequinns

YELLOW defensive team with set conditions are set up as GK > LB + 2 x CH's > 2 CM players & 1 CF with remaining players as manequinns.

Set up/Objectives

* Play will start from coach in target zone who can play to either Red team CH.

* Red team objective is to play to a finish and try to score using link up play through centre/right side of mid > final 1/3 of pitch with an emphasis on creating 1v1/2v1's in wide ares.

* Yellow team objective is to defend and if they win possession they can score by passing into the coach in the 15x10 target area within an 8 second time limit/ Yellow team GK can also score if he hits coach on the full in target area.

Duration:

* 20 mins in 4 x 5 min blocks

Coaching style:

* Guided discovery with Q&A between each 5 min block. Play freely for 1st 5 min block to set the scene for coaching points.

Keypoints:

* options for player on ball when passing forward

* triggers for players to make runs

* movement to create space for team mate

* type/weight of pass in mid > final 1/3

Problem 1/ Solution

Problem 1:

* After the 1st 5 min block the red team are finding it difficult to create 1v1/2v1 situations in wide areas mainly because the yellow team are not being dragged out of position due to poor runs or a lack of understanding for triggers for players to make pass/run or player on ball having too many touches.

Solution:

* To make play less predictable encourage player on ball to limit his touches and play pass early when space is available and defensive team has less time to get organised. When RSCH receives the pass and takes his second touch you can coach the following triggers:

1/ both CM players need to pull away from the ball and open up to receive on back foot > wide right player can step in off the line and show for ball which could drag in yellow LB (passing option if FB stays in shape and doesn't track) > short striker can show to try and drag LSCH out of shape > TRIGGER for 2nd striker to run channel for lofted pass & create 1v1 in wide area.

2/ when wide right steps in and short striker shows for bounce pass the red FB is triggered to make forward run into wide area with pass from CM player or wide player > long striker can then make the box.

3/ The FB can also slide a pass into channel using same triggers from wide player stepping in and short striker showing for long strikers run.

Keypoint

* limited touches is the key with repetition needed for players to develop an understanding of what triggers are used for the when/where/how/who & why for timing of runs/passes.

SSG: Organisation (30 mins)

SSG: 3x10 min blocks

Pitch size:

* Full width of pitch with length split into 1/3rds 20-20-30 def/mid/final 1/3 & marked out with flat markers.

* The flat markers also split each 1/3 into 4 zones to be used as reference points 1/2/3/4

* balls at red team GK to start each play.

RED team set up 2-4-2 + GK with YELLOW team playing 3-3-2 + GK

Set up/Conditions:

* Yellow team have to stay in there allocated 1/3rds when red team have possession but 1 player can link with next 1/3 on transition within a 15 second time limit to try and score.

* 1 red player can drop into defensive 1/3 to create a 3v2 with any of the 3 defenders then allowed to link with mid 1/3 to create a 4v3 > 2 red players can then join in final 1/3 to create a 4v3 overload and try and score.

** if yellow defender/GK gains possession they can counter quickly to create an overload as reds have committed players in the box (15 seconds)

* Play starts from the red GK who can play into the defensive or mid 1/3.

* Red defenders can play into final 1/3 with longer pass if required.

Objective

* The red teams aim is to try and score with bright play with an emphasis on fast tempo and limited touches to create 1v1/2v1 situations in wide areas.

* Yellow teams objective is to stay compact to prevent play through central areas and try and score on transition.

Problem 2/Solution (30 mins)

Problem 2

* The yellow team are very well organised and are managing to limit our attacks down the same side following 1st pass from Red GK > despite good movement and using triggers coached & practised in function we are unable to find space to create 1v1/2v1 situations on same side as ball

Solution:

* When Right sided defender receives the pass from the red GK encourage 2nd striker and wide left midfielder to pull high and wide on opposite side to the ball to be more expansive > defender then has the option of the long diagonal pass to create an overload on opposite side > this is also the trigger for the red team mates to move in relation to ball to support and get bodies in box.

* Patience is needed at times if a team is organised and defends deep with 2 banks of 4 > switching the ball at pace is important to try and prevent the shift with a pass missing out the midfeild link an option to create an overload.

Keypoints:

> work on triggers for pass/run with repetition key to develop understanding between players.

> limited touches on transition is important with 1st pass forwards if possible to prevent teams becoming organised and limiting space between and behind units/individuals.

> be expansive with passing options on opposite side if opposition are compact and deep on same side of ball.

> try and drag opponents out of shape with bright and inventive play so you are less predictable

> front 2 need to work as short & long striker to create space in wide areas
