Description

The focus of this session is to encourage players to beat an opponent 1v1.

Players should be encouraged to draw their opponent one direction, before using a feint, turn, or change of direction to beat them in the space created.

Aside from finding comfort on the ball, players are to learn to recognise the following moments:

  • Can I draw an opponent one way?
  • Can I then use a feint, turn or change of direction (also change of tempo) to move into the space created and beat them 1v1.

Principles

  • Ball mastery

  • Learning feints, fakes, turns & shielding of the ball.

  • Learning how to beat an opponent in various circumstances.

1v1 vs Mannequins

Set Up

  • 15m by 15m square
  • 4x Mannequins set up in the middle.
  • Four groups of players line up on the corners of the area.
  • Players at the start of the line have a ball each.

Objective

  • Players drive into the area and perform a feint or skill to beat the mannequin and dribble through to the end of the other line.
  • Coach to give them tasks to complete whilst dribbling; using varying areas of the foot.
  • Players are to be aware of 'traffic' from other players.
These include:
  • Dribbling and changing directions with the outside of the foot.
  • Dribbling and changing directions with the inside of the foot.
  • Changing directions by pulling the ball back with the sole of foot (L shape)
  • Changing directions by flicking the ball behind the standing leg with the inside of the foot.
  • Feints by dropping shoulder one way and taking the ball in the opposite direction.

Challenge players by using some out of this video.

1v1 using feints, fakes and turns (15 mins)

1v1

Set Up

  • Area set up about 15m x 10m
  • Two mini goals in centre of area facing outwards. Approx. 4-5m apart.
  • Players split up into two groups and line up behind cone at opposite ends of the area.

Objective

  • Practice starts with one player from each end stepping into the area.
  • The black team plays a pass into the player on the opposite side and then becomes the defender.
  • Once the pass is made they are required to engage in a 1v1.

  • The player that receives the ball has to try and score in one of the mini-goals.
  • The player should be aiming to disguise which goal they are going through; and beat the opponent using feints, turns, and changes of direction to draw the defender towards a goal before attacking the other.

  • If a player successfully scores, their team receives a point.

  • Rotate the team passing the ball in so all players have adequate time attacking and defending.

IF PLAYERS ARE STRUGGLING TO PASS THE BALL IN THE I SUGGEST COACH DO THAT

2v2 Games (15 mins)

  • 2v2 Games
  • Pitches set up about 15m long by 10m wide.
  • If a team wins, they move up a pitch and if they lose they move down a pitch.
  • Run games for 2 minutes.
  • Try to keep games at 2v2 to encourage lots of 1v1s.
  • If odd numbers, one team can have a sub they rotate each game - they must rotate fairly.
  • If odd number of teams, then the team that wins on pitch 1 (the highest pitch) gets a rest.
