Working to track back and defend. - 15 minutes
The drill is designed to build an attitude of getting back on defensive transiton, dont give up, help out your teammate. This is a quick transiton drill, not a possession drill, if it takes too long to attack, call it and continue with next group.
Procedure:
2v2, once the ball goes in the pug or out of play, one of the attacking players has to run and touch the net before he can come back and defend, while at the same time the next two in line (on either side of the net) attack without waiting. So it will be a 2v1 for a bit until the other player catches up....and so on.... Keep drill going to build a flow of work rate without too many interruptions. They should be sweating and pumping!
Focus:
- Dont give up! even if you think you wont catch up.
- Delay - defender neeeds to delay waiting for teammate to catch up.
- shut down space quickly!
- organize once teammat catches up, pressure and balance.
There will be many 2 v1 as other player wotn catch up, and some 2 v 0, keep it going and have them sort it out and catch up.

4v4 Transition- expanding on earlier drill. You can work on this drill as an attacking transition or defensive transition.....for tonight work on defensive. - 20 mins
Team in possession attempts to score, once ball goes out or in the net (put pugs in the middle of the net as you wont have any goalies), player on side of goal plays pass to a wide player to restart. The 4 that were defending drop off and take up the positons on the side of the net and on the sides, the attacking team defend in tranistion.......and repeat.
Focus:
- continous transition of drill, maintain flow of attacking and defending, minimal interruption except if drill not working coachign points required.
- player behind net must play pass quickly when play is over, the whole point is the transition, if they take too long the drill wont work properly.
- Defending principles of first defender, force to area of support, and press.
- shut down space and get after the attackers, react quickly and dont ball watch.
- take middle away first in transition and organize, dont run back in straight lines, get tight.
- pay attention to lines and space in between defenders, eliminate penetrating balls through lines.
