Details
- The 3 yellow gates are removed so that there are less gates to get through
- The same practice as before but there are now 2 defenders, who are holding bibs, if they win your ball then you become the defender and take the bib off them and they take your ball, defenders cannot immediately go for the person who just took their ball.
- Players are still counting how many gates they can get through in 90 seconds
- If you do not have a ball at the end of the game then you have to do 15 toe taps.
Look Out For
- Make sure that players are constantly moving and not waiting on the side that the defenders are not at.
Challenges
- Challenge the better players to predominantly use their weaker foot.
Interventions
- If players are stood still and not moving, freeze the game to explain that we must be constantly moving to try and get the highest score.
- Fly bys and 1 to 1s to help those struggling

Tactical How can they relate this to a real game? |
|
Physical Lots of work on agility, balance and speed. Addition of strength to try and hold off defenders |
|
Psychological Players have to be resilient to try get the ball back from their partner, trying to dribble away whilst also going through gates. |
|
Social Defenders can communicate and work together to get balls. |
Details
- Players are now partnered up with 1 defending and one trying to dribble through the gates.
- If a defender wins the ball then they start to try and dribble through the gates.
- The aim is to dribble through more gates than their partner
- Players are partnered up on ability and the coach chooses the pairs.
Things to Look Out For:
- All pairs are working and not taking it easy, reinforce the competition.
Progression
- Players can swap partners during the game and try to defend a new player, the aim then is to just get the most gates dribbled through.
Regressions
- If there is not enough dribbling success, regress the practice back to just 4 defenders so that there is more dribbling.
- Introduce a safe zone where players can go in for 5 seconds.
Coaching Points
- Still using all parts of the feet to dribble away from their defender, using skills where needed to beat the defender.
Interventions
- Fly Bys and 1 to 1s mixed in to help those that are struggling
- 1 to 1s to add targets to individual players to get through a certain amount of gates
- Freeze the practice to explain the progression.
Players are asked to pick up the red gates before they go for their water break.

Details
- 50 x 33 yds - 3 yard end zones at each side.
- 4 blue gates left on the field.
- Teams score a point by dribbling into the end zone and stopping the ball.
- If they can dribble through a gate before they dribble into the end zone then it counts as 2 goals
- Players are in their teams from the skill practice when they were partnered up.
Progressions
- Remove the gates after 10 minutes and go to just dribbling into the end zone for a point, see if players are still trying to dribble into space.
Regressions
- Add more gates if players are struggling to dribble through the gates.
Coach Instructions
- Explain the practice to the group before they go out onto the field.
- Let them go out onto the field, then show a demonstration of what 2 goals is and what 1 goal is.
- Explain that they cannot guard gates
Interventions
- After 5 minutes, freeze the practice and ask the players if they have to try to dribble through the gates every time?
- Use Fly Bys and 1 to 1s to help those that are struggling

Technical (10 mins)
Description
- Area - 33 x 33
- 15 gates set up in the square using flat markers, 3 yellow, 4 blue and 8 red.
- Gates are 2.5 ft apart
- Each player has a ball and must dribble through the gates.
Progressions
- Players are told to increase the speed at which they are dribbling, now if their ball rolls over a flat marker or their ball hits someone else's or another player, they must do 10 toe taps.
If the players are not hitting any of the flats, maybe make the gates smaller to increase difficulty.
- Players now have to count how many gates they can get through in 90 seconds, this is done 4 times, with players trying to beat their previous score or have the highest total.
Regressions
- Increase the gate size if they are struggling.
Coaching Points
- Dribbling techniques - Using all parts of the feet
- Keeping the ball close, not running with the ball.
- Using both feet
Coaching Instructions
- Have the group stood in front of you, highlight the gates behind them, instruct them on just dribbling through the gates.
- Ask what parts of the foot we use to dribble? Should we keep the ball close and why?
- Let the players play and get familiar with the game, after 2 minutes, challenge them all to increase their speed
- After 3 minutes, whilst the players are still out there, introduce that they cannot let their ball touch a flat marker, another players ball or another player.
Coaching Interventions
- Main intervention is a freeze to ask if they would dribble like that in a real game and then to challenge all the players too move faster.
Look Out For:
- All players constantly moving
