HYSC Effective Pressing Defending 1v1 Transition
This week the focus will be how to defend as an individual in 1v1 situations teaching the players correct tackling technique and decision making based on the defencive principles of the game.
We will then move on to teach the player how to effectively press when defending, dictating the attackers movement back towards their own goal. this will create moments of transition for the defender when stealing the ball recognising to switch to attack and try to score.

Organization:
20x30 Same grids as before.but devided into 3 channels 10x20
groups of 4 -6 players. per grid
A lot of the balls as spares.
Instructions:
-Defender pass the ball to attacker and must hold him behind the middle line for 5 seconds to win
-if the attacker goes to penetrate the defender will steel the ball and transition to the opposite side of the grid.
Coaching Points:
Defending 4D's
-Delay the attacker
-Deny penetration
-Dictate the attackers movement of where you want them to move using body position
-Defend ,using a tackling technique or deflect the ball away
Types of tackle
-Poke ,using your back foot to push off towards the ball using the front surface of your foot to poke the ball out from attackers feet
-Block ,using your side on stance & keeping your back foot firm as the attacker goes to penetrate use the inside or out side surface of your foot to deny penetration creating block
-Slide ,this tackle is often used as the last resort ,using your leading foot slide into an area where the attacker looks to penetrate making contact with only the ball, toes must be pointed down and you must always lead with one foot.
Defending 1v1 principles
- Deny penetration via position on field.
- Body position in order to see the whole field.
- Reading visual cue of attacking player’s pass for a possible
interception i.e. eye contact made, head is down to pass.
- If interception is not possible, pressure ball to prevent turn
and make attacker receive on front foot.
-Angle of approach/shape of run to make play predictable
-Can I separate attacker with the ball from supporting player,
make it 1vs1
-Reading visual cues of receiving player in order to decide whether pressure should be applied tightly and/or tackle as
they receive. If receiving player has lifted head up after receiving, defender should look to jockey/retreat.
-Assessing opportunity to tackle, has the attacking player offered the chance to make a challenge? i.e. poor touch or lifted head to assess options.
-Distance from first attacker to determine space in behind.
-Track runner as the ball moves, don’t ball watch
Progressions: Shaded area on diagram
-Defender must stop the pass to second attacker behind him if he steels can he now find the pass to the player ahead of him.

Organization:
Same as before grids of 4-6 players
Instructions:
-Defender passes the ball to the attacker then goes to defend and stop the attacker from scoring.
- if the defender wins the ball win the ball can now transition to attack the opposite goal.
-1 point for stopping penetration & 2 points for transitional goal
Coaching Points:
-Deny penetration
-Speed of approach
-Angle of approach force player on to weak side
- Correct moments to tackle
-Faint to tackle to force a mistake
-Tackling techniques
-dictate attackers movement back towards their own goal
-Transition to attack
-refrence line of goal to the attacker and how to break that line making sure the goal is protected.

Organization:
20x15 area
two starting cones
two scoring gates
teams of 4-6 players
defending team has balls
Instructions:
-defender passes the ball to the attacker and goes to defend
-attacker is trying to get through the gate in front of them
-defender has to steel the ball and attack the opposite gate
-if the defender pushes the ball out of bounds that 1 point but if they steel the score they get 2
-rotate back to your own line defenders and attackers switch after set amount of time coaches choice.
Coaching Points:
-Deny penetration
-Speed of approach
-Angle of approach force player on to weak side
-Correct moments to tackle
-Faint to tackle to force a mistake
-Tackling techniques
-dictate attackers movement back towards their own goal
-Transition to attack
Progressions:
-add goals instead of gate and now the players can score.

Organization:
1. Area size 20 x 15 for two fields or 20x30 for one field .this all depends on if you want multiple game gong at the same time or a round robin tournament using one field(coaches choice this will also depend on space available)
Instructions:
1. Players split up into 4 teams and play a round robin tournament where all teams play.
2. players must not step inside the red cone areas in front of goal this will stop goal tending ,the players must shoot from out side the area
Coaching Points:
1. 3 lines of attack, defender, midfielder, forward.
2.Team mates create gaps, can player in possession look to dribble into them.
3.when to Dribble,Pass or Shoot
4.reinforce the characteristics of each foundational players and how the use the foot work with the space they have.
Week 6 Restart & team shape
all restarts are indirect and their will be no throw ins. this week we will also introduce Goal kicks and how to position the opposing team ready to defend straight away and try to create turn overs .
before the restarts take place have the player spread out as first pass is not free.
Please note if you want to play 5v5 or 6v6 feel free but make sure space is correct size to allow the players better success.
Rules
the secondary learning outcome give each team 5 points at the start of the tournament ,they will loose points for bunching up and getting to close to their players. also, they can win points by making a successful pass or move to beat the player. coach will judge .
along with wins 3points draws 2points and losses 1point the team with the most over all points including bonus points will win the tournament at the end of practice.
Week 6 Principle of play
this week's principal of plays will be defensive transition try to base your game stoppages around these principles and recreate a realistic game situation to bring out your learning outcomes of shooting

Organization:
30x20 field,every player with a ball
Pug goals as shown above
players split into two teams with pinnies.
Instructions
depending on the goals you want to set for your teams each week choose from the bellow foundations the best ones to bring out the learning outcomes you want your players to achieve during the game.
Foundations Part 1 individual possession surface control & (Soccer side work recap U8-U9 ONLY)
as the player trickle in before a game have them recp the homework that was sent out . then when the majority of the group is there .each player must complete a series of ball mastery surface control the coach or player will demonstrate the below list of moves and have the players copy for 1 minute of repetition for each one
beginner
-pendulums inside of the foot forward+backward
-toe taps forward+backward
intermediate
-v turn & touch
-u turn & touch
advanced
-L turn & touch
-Ronaldo chop & touch
Foundations part 2 individual possession player attributes
players dribble the ball around the inside of the grid and cover each foundation ,players will also be given a number 1,2,3 or 4 or teams will be put in different pinnie colors.
on coach's command they will call out a number or pinnie color the players whose numbers or colors were called out will become defenders trying to steal the ball. in the example in the diagram #2 was called so both #2's will go to defend
If the defenders steel they will transition and try to score in one of the pug goals for a point
the players on the ball will gain points by keeping possession of the ball for the entire round.(30 second rounds).
* MESSI/LLOYD: Head up looking to get into the gaps using small, quick touches with the Pinky Toe (outside of the foot).
* POGBA/HORAN: Head up to recognize when there's no gaps/space, then change of direction (12 o'clock to 6 o'clock), ball comes out of your feet, and then head and eyes up getting into the new space.
* RONALDO/MORGAN: Head up to see when there's a lot of space in front of you, then big touch to accelerate and get your head/eyes up and attack the space.
*INIESTA/PUGH : Head up to recognise small tight spaces ,using the inside/outside surfaces of the foot to unbalance defenders to make the space big enough to penetrate
*NEYMAR/HEATH using multiple surfaces to manipulate the ball unbalance defenders using a moves to create space for end product
*RAMOS/JOHNSON:players will leave there ball static in the grid and run from ball to ball on coach's command .They will work on their defensive approach speed up then slow down before contact ,eyes on ball, body side on defensive stance staying on there toes .
*SUAREZ/MARTA:Head up to observe target, touch into space to create shooting room, strike with laces or finish with multiple surface, follow up for rebound finish
Foundations part 3 Group possession
-same set up as foundations part 2 but this time the teams share one ball and keep possession as a group. coach will call out a number and this time they will go to defend against their opposite color. every 3 passes they can make, they will receive a point and an extra 3 points if they maintain possession for the entire round.
-if the defense steels the ball they must transition to score to gain a point they can also combine to go to goal too.
Foundation Part 4 Defensive principles
players work in twos one has a ball the other players will work on Jockeying the player with the ball switching the front foot in relation to their surroundings and where they want to force the player with the ball.
progression when the coach says go the defensive players will try to steal the ball and transition to goal
