Possession Game With Transition to Small Goals
Objective
Blue works to keep possession using interior and exterior players, while Red defends collectively and looks to score immediately upon winning the ball.
Team Roles & Rules
Blue (Possession Team)
Inside the square:
Blue players have no touch restriction.
Outside the square:
Blue players play one-touch only, forcing quick circulation and support angles.
Yellow neutrals:
Play for Blue at all times.
Two-touch maximum to keep tempo high.
Blue aims to connect passes, use the neutrals, and move the ball across the grid to create overloads and maintain possession.
Red (Defending Team)
Red players work together to press, trap, and win the ball inside the square.
When Red wins possession, they can immediately break out and score in either of the small goals outside the grid.
If Red loses the ball before shooting, play continues with Blue back in possession.
How the Game Works
Play starts with Blue keeping the ball in the large square.
Blue must use a mix of:
1-touch outside players,
2-touch neutrals,
free-play internal Blue players,
to build rhythm and escape pressure.
Red presses to force turnovers and transition quickly to the mini goals for a finish.
Blue can enter the square to emergency defend and win the ball back
Coaching Points
For Blue
Use the 1-touch outside players and neutrals to switch play quickly.
Body shape open to the field play forward when possible.
Move the ball into open spaces to break the Red press.
Support angles: Blue inside must constantly check in and out to receive.
For Red
Press in pairs or small groups don’t chase individually.
Anticipate triggers: poor touch, slow pass, back turned.
Immediate transition:
First touch forward,
Second touch shoot at the mini goal.
Overall Purpose
Develop possession under pressure.
Train fast decision-making under different touch restrictions.
Build transition habits both counterpressing for Blue and counterattacking for Red.
Encourage spatial awareness and switching play.

Setup:
The field is divided into three vertical zones: Left, Central, Right.
Two teams (Red vs. Blue) compete to keep possession.
Yellow is a neutral player in the central zone and plays on two touches only.
Red and Blue players are limited to one-touch whenever they receive the ball in the central zone.
In any zone, no more than 3 players from the same team may be present at one time. This forces constant movement and prevents overcrowding.
How the Drill Works
Teams try to maintain possession by moving the ball across the zones, through the central channel when possible.
Players can move freely between zones but must respect the 3-per-team maximum in each zone.
In wide zones, players have normal touch limits.
When the ball enters the central zone, any Red or Blue player receiving must play one-touch only, increasing speed and forcing quicker decision-making.
Yellow (the neutral) helps the team in possession as a bounce player but has a two-touch maximum, ensuring the ball keeps flowing.
The objective is to shift the ball from side to side, using the middle zone and the neutral to break pressure.
Coaching Points
Scanning early before entering the central zone due to one-touch restriction.
Encourage constant off-the-ball movement to open passing lanes.
Players should create triangles and diamonds around the ball for easy support.
Use the Yellow neutral to connect and switch play efficiently.
Emphasize quick circulation and avoiding getting stuck in one zone.
Ensure spacing stays balanced by reinforcing the 3-player-per-zone rule.
Purpose of the Drill
Train controlled possession with high speed of play.
Improve awareness, movement timing, and zone occupation.
Develop comfort playing under touch restrictions.
Encourage switching play, breaking lines, and recognizing overloads.

Flow of the Pattern
Outside player → inside player → opposite outside player.
Inside players mostly play diagonal passes, switching the point of attack.
Outside players keep the rhythm by moving to the next cone on the outside square after each pass.
Purpose of the Drill
Improve body orientation and awareness when receiving centrally.
Train diagonal passes, breaking lines, and connecting the interior with the exterior.
Reinforce movement timing for outside players.
Build rhythm and tempo in possession.
Key Coaching Points
Inside players: open body shape, receive across the body, play diagonally with correct weight.
Outside players: move immediately after the pass; check shoulders before receiving.
Tempo: keep the ball circulating quickly and cleanly.
Angles: maintain proper distance between squares to create realistic passing lanes.
