This session focuses on developing attacking patterns from wide areas, targeting three key finishing zones: front post, cut-back, and back post. The objective is to improve both the timing and quality of delivery as well as the movement and decision-making of attackers inside the box.
Players will progress through a series of unopposed and opposed activities, beginning with technical repetitions and building into conditioned game scenarios. Emphasis will be placed on crossing under pressure, attacking delivery types (mid-box & byline), and finishing under realistic defensive constraints.
The session concludes with a competitive finishing game to reinforce execution under fatigue and decision-making in tight spaces.

Opposed Mid Box & Byline Crossing
Game Model Moment: Attacking Organisation
Phase of Play: Final Third
Principle: Delivering the Ball
Sub-Principle: Wide Delivery Under Pressure
Organisation:
Set up two mirrored grids closer to the goal than typical layout/animation to simulate more realistic distances and ensure tempo.
Ball starts with the 6 (deep midfielder), who combines with a supporting central midfielder (bounce pass) before playing a wide ball out to the winger.
The winger takes a controlled touch and drives forward to deliver a cross into the box.
In the Box:
4 attackers make dynamic runs:
Front post runner
Cut-back zone runner
Back post runner
Late edge-of-box arrival
2 defenders actively defend crosses and track runners.
Coaching Emphasis:
Timing and angle of the 6's delivery to the winger.
Body shape and touch of the winger prior to crossing – whip, drive, or cut-back.
Movement cues of attackers:
Early front post run
Delayed back post movement
Cut-back timing aligned with winger's touch
Defending Focus:
Track runners zonally or man-mark depending on emphasis.
Communication between defenders to manage space and threats.
Progression:
Allow defenders to step out earlier to press cross delivery.
Add recovering midfielders to pressure the initial bounce and delivery.
Set-Up Note:
Ensure drill is positioned closer to goal than standard animation to replicate match-relevant crossing distances and maintain intensity.
Variation:
Use left and right channels simultaneously (two stations) to maximise reps and keep players active.

3v2 With Wide Player Support & Recovery Crossing
Game Model Moment: Attacking Phase
Phase of Play: Final Third & Counter-Attacking
Principle: Delivering the Ball
Sub-Principle: Decision-Making Under Load & Crossing from Wide Areas
Organisation:
Grid size: 44m (length) x 36m (width) with full-size goals at each end.
Set up 3 attackers vs 2 defenders centrally, with 2 neutral wide players positioned wide on either side.
Initial Phase:
Play begins with 3 attackers dribbling out from halfway.
Attackers must complete a pass before taking a shot – no solo finishes allowed.
Wide players can be used as bouncers to facilitate passing but cannot cross at this stage.
Recovery Phase:
When play ends (goal, save, ball out, or defenders win possession), the 2 defenders immediately counter.
They pass to either wide player, who delivers an unopposed cross into the box for them to attack.
Drill restarts with a new group of 3 attackers and 2 defenders.
Key Coaching Points:
Attacking Team:
Encourage quick combinations under pressure.
Focus on intelligent off-ball movement to create passing lanes.
Visualise front-post, back-post, and cut-back runs even if not used in this phase.
Defending Team:
Stay compact and protect goal-side space.
Transition quickly after regaining possession – play forward with intent.
Communicate effectively to attack the unopposed cross with purpose.
Wide Players:
Deliver with purpose – hit specific zones (front, middle, or back).
One or two touches max to simulate realistic crossing conditions.
Progression:
Allow wide players to cross for both teams during initial attacking phase.
Creates a true 5v2 attacking dynamic, encouraging real-time crossing decisions and better defensive responsibility.

5v5 Cage

Sub-Principle: Execution Under Pressure & Variety in End Product
Organisation:
Grid Size: Approx. 36m x 24m
Format: 5v5 inside the cage
Support: 2 neutral bounce players (1 per sideline) – 1-touch passing only
Goals: Standard goals with goalkeepers
Rules:
Bounce players assist with quick wall passes to create shooting angles.
Goals must be scored from inside the grid.
After every goal or out of play, restart instantly to maintain intensity.
Players encouraged to try various types of finishes.

Defensively, press tight in the cage and protect central channels.

Organisation:
3 attackers inside the box (central runner, front post, and back post runners).
2 wide players on each side:
Wide Player 1 (starting deeper) passes to Wide Player 2 (advanced).
Wide Player 2 sets and crosses into the box for the 3 attackers.
Use mannequins as passive defenders to create visual references and traffic.
Rotation:
Rotate wide players after every few reps.
Attacking runners switch lines to practice all angles.
Coach Notes:
Focus on timing of run vs. timing of delivery.
Quality of delivery: low cut-backs, whipped front post, floated back post.
Emphasise delivery technique & decision-making based on mannequin placement.
Variation:
Depending on player numbers, set up two mirrored crossing zones running simultaneously to maximise reps and reduce downtime.
