2v3 Defending (20 mins)

Method:2v3 Time: 20min - SEAN

Defending as a Pair Skill Practice

In this practice, coach players how to balance and cover as Centre Backs a pairing in the defensive third.

The ball starts with the Goalkeeper, who plays a long pass to the 3 attackers on the halfway line. As this happens, the 2 Centre Backs need to push up the field as quickly as possible to set a line.

Once the attackers receive the ball, they can start the attack creating a 3v2 to the big goal. If the defenders win the ball, they can score in any of the mini-goals.

Coaching Points:

  • Stay Compact: When defending, players need to stay compact and prevent the opposition from playing forward or shooting.
  • Blocking the goal and timing: The defensive players have to be brave and expect to block shots from the opposition as well as looking to clear the ball from their area with quality if needs be. Also, at the correct opportunity, players should look make tackles and interceptions to win the ball.
  • Recovering: If the ball passes the defensive unit, they need to recover towards the goal and look to prevent the attackers from shooting.
  • Manage the Opposition: Manage the opposition to get beyond the attacking line and take shots at the right moment.

4v4 (20 mins)

Method:4v4 Time: 20min ADRIAN/SEAN/DYLAN

Coach your players how to defend in balance as a unit, to cover and balance depending on the ball and opponents position.

The ball starts with the Goalkeeper, who plays a long pass to the 4 attackers on the halfway line. As this happens, the 4 Defenders need to push up the field as quickly as possible to set a line.

Once the attackers receive the ball, they can start the attack creating a 4v4 to the big goal. If the defenders win the ball, they can score in any of the mini-goals.

Coaching Points:

  •  PRESS COVER AND BALANCE AS A UNIT: Encourage players to work as a unit keeping their shape as a back 4. The closest player must keep in shape but slightly engage the player on the ball to force them to make a decision however they must not over commit as the objective is to keep the ball in front of them and keep their shape. The other players must slide and screen any passes.
  • DISTANCES: Encourage players to remain compact as a unit with distances being tight so no pass will break the back 4 as well as blocking any shots coming there way.
  • DISCIPLINED: Players must be disciplined in their shape along with communicating effectively on who engages, who needs to slide across. When there is an opportunity to pinch the ball encourage players to come out and pinch it.
  •  how to slide and screen whilst defending as a unit.
  •  how to cut out passing lanes in behind and remaining compact.

9v9 Game (20 mins)

Method: 9v9 Game Time: 20min ADRIAN/SEAN/DYLAN

This scenario game challenges your players to come up with game strategies to defend to win the ball early or to defend a lead.

9 blues play against 9 greens. Greens are losing 2-0 with 15 minutes to go. Greens - Can you plan how you will defend to try to regain the ball early create goals? Blues - Can you defend to hold on to your lead to counter-attack?

Blue team formation: 1-4-3-1 Defending

Green team formation: 1-2-3-3 Attacking

Coaching Points:

  • Roles and Responsibilities: In order to defend in balance players must understand their roles within the team. Nearest player to be able to apply pressure to press the line of approach (1st Defender). Support cover from teammates with appropriate angles distances (2nd Defender). Support Cover to offer balance (3rd Defender).
  • Recognise triggers: To press, players must recognise cues when the attacker is not in control of the ball, such as soft passes, big touch, weak foot, bouncing the ball, to then, press and look to win the ball.
  • No pressure: If there is no pressure on the ball players should drop the line reshape and wait for opportunities to engage.
