Description

Training session focuses on the development of the goalkeeper while still working with the team as a whole. This session gives Head Coaches the ability to work with the goalkeeper if the team does not have a keeper coach, assistant coach, or extra trainer to help with individual keeper training. Warm-up is standard and goalkeepers can work on their own or partner. Progressions 2-4 can be implemented into training sessions with players and they can provide support as the shooters.

Goalkeeper Warm-Up (Progression 1)

- Have keepers jog around the field. Once without the ball and once with a ball.
- After a slight jog, continue by proceeding into dynamic stretches such as Frankenstein's, butt-kickers, high knees, walking calf stretch, open/close the gate, and arm circles.

- Allow players to stretch what feels stiff with dynamic or static stretches. Offer help if needed with support.

Partner Work: Have keepers or assistant coach partner up with the goalkeeper's arms by going into a throwing exercise.

1. Rolling Drill: This first drill starts with the keeper in a sitting position. The keeper has a partner who will serve the ball. The keeper rolls to the right as their partner serves the ball on the ground. The keeper traps the ball on the ground using both hands. Keeper returns ball to server and rolls to a sitting position again in one motion. Server then rolls ball to the left and the drill is repeated.

2. High Ball: One player bounces the ball so it will go over the head of his partner. Partner jumps for the ball and yells Keeper," catching the ball over head in a W.

Make sure that the catcher brings their knee up to protect their midsection. After the catch the catcher becomes the server for his partner.

Coaching Points:

- It is important that goalkeepers warm up properly to ensure that their bodies are loose and to help prevent any injuries.

- Make sure that goalkeepers are warming up with some intensity and are focused on their basics/foundation such as hands forming w shape, body slightly curved away from the goal, and knees being bent.

Goalkeeper Session: Playing out the back towards goal (Final Progression)

The team with a goalkeeper will have to pass the ball back first to the goalkeeper to force the keeper to rotate the ball around or play a through ball on the ground. This forces the keeper to get comfortable with the ball at their feet. This team will be allowed to go toward the mini-goals once they play back with the keeper.

The attacking team will have no restrictions to be able to produce game-like pressure and keep intensity up.

Coaching Points:

- Have players check in with the goalkeeper when they have the opportunity to provide a passing opportunity.

- The goalkeeper should be leading their back line and guiding them on which way to shift on the field.

- Have the goalkeeper play short and get comfortable playing on the ground to keep possession of the ball.
