Recycling the ball through the backline and triggers/cues
2010B Block 1, Week 6, Session 2
Principles:
- Spread out (CBs drop off deep and wide, width of full backs)
- Find the spare man (the weak sided full back through the switch)
- Draw pressure to break a line (draw defenders to one side to try and play the other)
- Play forward when possible (and not outnumbered) to advance the ball

Keep away, 5v5 +GKs (adjust for numbers as needed)
- One team and GKs keep possession, and can score with 6 passes OR by switching play x3
- The pressing team can score in either goal once the ball is regained.
- The ball always restarts with the GKs
- Each team keeps the ball for 4 minutes, and presses for 4 minutes
Coaching points:
-Principle: Find the spare man!
- A pass backwards is followed by a switch or a pass forward
- Use the midfielders to find options!
- Principle: Draw pressure to break a line:
- Draw defenders to you, play though, if not able to play through, play around
- Speed of play, 3 seconds or less to make the decision!

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
As shown. Half field
- Gates can only be dribbled thru. worth 2 goals
- Pugg goal is only worth 1 goal
- Defenders can score in the big goal, worth 3 goals
- Ball starts with playing to the 2 or 3, defenders start near the centre circle
Coaching points:
Principle: Find the spare man
- If you are not able to dribble forward on the wing, recycle to switch play quickly (outnumbered)
- CBs should run backward to get deep and wide when they see the 2 or 3 is outnumbered
- Quickly receive with the backfoot and play the switch (or forward)
- #6 should move to a 'pocket' of space between defensive lines to create triangles with the back line
(KEY TAKEAWAYS)
- CBs dropping deep and wide to offer a support option
- The outside backs knowing when to turn and recycle and when to drive and dribble through the gate

Technical 1v1s - Compass game (25 mins)
6 players each grid (add another N if needed)
- 1v1 in the middle
- Target players for each team on the end
- Central players start by switching with the target they connect to
- Team gets a point each time they are able to connect 6 passes in a row
- If defending team regains the ball, they score the same way
Progression:
- Teams can now score a point after connecting with both targets, and scoring in a mini goal/dribbling through a gate. Central player only switches after they score a goal OR have been scored on 3 times in a row
Coaching points:
- Scan x3 and early to know where you are going next/where pressure is!
- Quality, zipped passes (listen for the sound of the ball!)
- First touch toward where you want to go whenever possible
- Coach each pass! (man on, turn, which shoulder!)
- Body shape to receive under pressure (receive on safe side, use body, open body shape if not under pressure)
- Use of movement and angles to get away from the defender
