Warm Up (20 mins)

Activation

Set up x2 for 12 players

3 teams of 2 player (Red, Black and Blue).

The group in the middle of the grid are the pressing team black (team). The red and blue players position themselves on opposite end of the grid.

The game begins with the blue or red players passing the ball to each other no more than 5 times before playing the ball to the opposite team.

The black team work as a pair to press the ball and cover the space in behind (They do not look to win it at this time).

After the ball is switch to the opposite end, the team that played the switch now become the pressing team in the middle.

Progression

  • Allow the pressing team to win the ball from the opposition and then look to finish in the mini goals.

Coaching Points

  • How fast should you approach the player?
  • What is the role of the closest player to the ball?
  • What is the role of the 2nd defender?
  • How can we use our balance to shift our weight to change speed?
  • Where do we want to force the player?

Technical Phase (10 mins)

1v1 activity to mini goals.

The game begins with the feeders or coaches feeding the ball into one of the two players who are ready to play.

The player that receives the ball is attacking the other is defending.

The aim of both players is to score in the oppositions goal.

After a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, players should return to their start positions ready to play again.

The feeders or coach can play to either player.

1 point for each goal scored.

Rotate the feeders after 3mins.

Progression

  • Play 2 or 3 balls with the same players active.

Coaching Points

  • Press the ball immediately as high up within the area as possible.
  • Press quickly with positive energy and speed.
  • Slow down and get into the correct body shape.
  • Keep your feet moving and remain balanced.
  • Engage the attacker and keep the space as tight as possible.
  • Force negative play from the attacker.

Intense Pressing (15 mins)

8v4 Pressing.

Split the group into 3 teams. One team will press for 2 minutes vs the other two teams (8v4). If the defending team win the ball, they look to score in any of the 4 goals around the grid.

The two teams of 4 (Reds and blues) look to make 8 consecutive passes, the defending team loses a point every time they are successful in doing this.

Play starts from the balls on the outside of the grid so this drill is player run. After 4 minutes rotate the teams so each one gets an opportunity to press. Play 2 sets in total and keep overall points.

Progressions

  • Add the team in possession must score a goal after 8 passes
  • If you win the ball and score before the opposition can connect 5 passes you get 2 points.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize aggressive pressure from the players towards the ball
  • Highlight key moments when to press = flat pass, bouncing ball, bad touch, moment to fully win.
  • Press effectively as a group
  • Angle and speed of the press
  • How quickly can we win the ball back?

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Build vs Press


5v5 or 4V4 in the main area plus two goalkeepers in a coned of area or small end zone.

The game begins with one of the goalkeepers passing into one of his 5 field players (encourage them to short and quick when possible) with the aim to play the ball into the opposite goalkeepers hands or feet within the end zone to score.

The team out of possession look to press together as a group to win the ball back as high up the field as possible.

After a goal is score players must retreat to the build out line before a new ball is played..

1 point every time we play the ball into the opposite keeper successfully.

Progressions

  • Add in real goals with GK's
  • 2 points if we can win the ball in the attacking half and score
  • 1 point if we win the ball in the defensive half and score.

Coaching Points

  • Press as a team with high energy & intensity through the ball.
  • Can we win the ball within 2-3 passes.
  • Role of the first, second and third defender.
  • Squeeze up the field to condense the space.
  • Angle of the press to dictate the oppositions play.
  • How can we force the opposition to play negatively?
  • Can we counter press on a loss of possession?
