Block 1 - Deep, Wide Situations and Short-Range Counter Attacking Actions
- Wide player starts with the ball and initiates the practice by taking a touch out of their feet, then looking to cross the ball into the box from a deep position - the attacker can look to impact the ball in this moment by trying to score.
- Goalkeeper must look to start high, anticipating leaving their goal - it is not imperative that they look to defend their area on every occasion (defined by speed and trajectory of the ball), but there will be encouragement for being aggressive in such moments.
- Following appropriate defending of the area, the goalkeeper must look to break towards the edge of their box and distribute into one of the two mini goals, either via roll or throwing action (30 yards) - if the ball falls to the attacker instead of the goalkeeper, the attacker must look to score and the goalkeeper make appropriate decisions (defend the space/ protect the goal) in that moment.

Block 2 - High, Wide Situations and Long-Range Counter Attacking Actions
- Wide player starts with the ball and initiates the practice by taking a touch out of their feet, then looking to cross the ball into the box from a higher position than before - the attacker can look to impact the ball in this moment by trying to score.
- Goalkeeper must look to start high, anticipating leaving their goal - it is not imperative that they look to defend their area on every occasion (defined by speed and trajectory of the ball), but there will be encouragement for being aggressive in such moments.
- Following appropriate defending of the area, the goalkeeper must look to break towards the edge of their box and distribute into one of the far two 7-a-side goals, either with a long throwing action or side volley (50-60 yards) - if the ball falls to the attacker instead of the goalkeeper, the attacker must look to score and the goalkeeper make appropriate decisions (defend the space/ protect the goal) in that moment.

Small-Sided Game (Wide Situations and Counter Attacking Actions)
Points System
- 1 point = Deflection (as a result of defending the space)
- 1 point = Short-Range Distribution (following a fast break)
- 2 points = Catch (as a result of defending the space)
- 2 points = Long-Range Distribution (following a fast break)
Game Process and Rules
- Football starts with one of the goalkeepers who look to serve into either of the wide players, who will then cross into the box of the opposite goalkeeper - there will be license for the wide players to take up different positions in wide areas and provide variation with the types of crosses that they look to deliver, directly impacting the goalkeepers' starting position and decision making.
- From the cross, the goalkeeper will have a decision to make relating to defending the space around them, or recovering into the goal to protect it - if the goalkeeper claims the ball, they can look to break and distribute long into the 7-a-side goals on the opposite side of the pitch and earn points in the process.
- If the goalkeeper decides that defending their box is not feasible in the moment, they risk the attacking player scoring against them which will result in them having to swap with that player (attacker becomes new goalkeeper, wide player responsible for the assist becomes new attacker, and original goalkeeper becomes new wide player).
- If successful when counter attacking (finding the goal), the football will start with the opposite goalkeeper, so as to give the other goalkeeper another opportunity to defend their box and initiate a counter attacking action - incentives/ rules will be provided to elicit aggressive actions and decision making.
- If unsuccessful when counter attacking (missing the goal), the ball will start with the goalkeeper who was unsuccessful in that moment, so as to provide the opposite goalkeeper an opportunity to defend their box and initiate a counter attacking action.

Session Objectives
- Develop goalkeepers' ability to defend the space or protect the goal in wide situations.
- Develop goalkeepers' ability to execute appropriate counter attacking actions over varied distances.
- Facilitate goalkeepers' understanding of appropriate starting positions and relevant decisions/ actions in the moment.
Session Design/ Setup (Specific Practice)
- 3/4 of a full size pitch (80 yards total)
- 6 goalkeepers (in groups of 3)
- 4 mannequins
- 6 sets per goalkeeper
- Repeat opposite side

Small-Sided Game (Explained in the 'Small-Sided Game' tab)
SSG related to defending the area in the box for goalkeepers, providing incentives for fast, aggressive actions, followed by speed and appropriate distribution actions when looking to counter attack.
Goalkeeper Focus
- Starting position relating to the ball, type of pass and threat posed to goal
- Decisions and execution of actions relating to defending the space or protecting the goal (aggressive, fast actions such as a catch or punch or a speedy recovery into the goal to set)
- Speed, aggression, timing and momentum to successfully defend the area
- Speed to initiate counter attacks
- Appropriate distribution actions relating to distance of the target (throws or kicks)
