Possession warm up (5 mins)

Organisation

  • 18 players - 9v9, 1 half of the pitch, 1 ball, Box for the midfielders (to start with, only the midfielders allowed in this box)

3v3 midfielders inside the box must stay in the box, everybody else must stay outside of it

Key points:

  • Just a possession based exercise where midfield players are restricted to the centre square for the time being, everyone else can move anywhere outside the square
  • Movement off the ball crucial for creating space and making yourself available for the pass
  • Quick tempo on the ball
  • Awareness of teammates/opposition/space
Progressions:
  • When a ball is played into the square, they must swap places with the player they passed it to
Time:
  • 2x4 min blocks

In possession - final third (25 mins)

Organisation: 18 players - 9v9 (1gk), 1 half of the pitch, 1 ball, 1 goal, Box for the midfielders (to start with, only the midfielders allowed in this box)

2v2 midfielders inside the box must stay in the box, everybody else must stay outside of it

  • I will be managing the blue (defending team) and coaching the red (attacking team)

Topic: Final third - in possession (reds)

Opposition principles: -

Protect the middle/Force wide/Defend the cross/Body on the line (Blues)

Key points:

  • Always try to play forward
  • Needs to be quality on the pass
  • Movement off the ball is crucial for opening up space
  • Wide players to be high and wide at all times to be the outlet - look to get the ball wide
  • Strikers movement - Interchange with each other and also with the number 10 (after the progression)
  • Midfielder movement - must interchange with each other and even do dummy runs
Progressions:
  • Once a red plays the ball to a teammate inside the box, they can then join them in the box to create a 3v2 overload
  • When a wide player or striker for the reds has it, a midfielder can make a run from the midfielders box into the penalty area to join the attack
Regressions:
  •  One of the red defenders starting position could be up front as to create a 3v2 overload in the attacking favour

Point scoring:

  • If the blues win the ball back and play into the striker, they get a point
  • If the blues defend a cross successfully, they get a point
  • If the reds break the midfield line and the striker gets a shot off, they get a point
  • If the reds can score without the opposition touching it, they get an extra point

Time (25 mins):

  • 4x5 min blocks
  • 1st block - Encourage wide players to get on the ball more and make use of undelaps/overlaps to try and play around the opposition
  • 2nd block - Encourage play through mainly the two CM's (wall passes/dummy runs etc)
  • 3rd block - one of the forward players can now drop into the midfield zone and play as a false 9, creating space for the other two strikers to exploit and draw the opposition out of position aswell as creating an overload in the middle of the pitch
  • 4th block - Can we play over the opposition and can the defence protect the space in behind

SSG (20 mins)

Organisation

  • Pitch extended slightly and tapered off
  • Midfielders box removed
  • Players to stay in their team and formation as in the previous exercise so it is easy to transition

Key Points:

  • Same principles of play to aim for. Blue team must try and stay compact and narrow and force the red team wide
  • Red team must create space by timing runs well
  • Encourage the red teams forwards and central midfield players to be expressive in their play and float about and interchange to cause problems for the blues
  • Red team must keep the ball moving quickly to disorganise the blues

Conditions:

  • Red team must take no more than three touches on the ball to keep the ball moving quickly and disorganise the opposition

Time:

  • 20 mins
