DELAYING ATTACKING PLAY (15 mins)
3 attackers across top of the area, coach feeds the ball in, their objective is to try and score
3 defenders at different starting points become active as soon as the attacker takes their first touch
Their objective is to either win the ball back and play into the smaller side goals, or force the attacking player in possession into the wide areas (marked by cones -away from the goal)
If a goal is scored, the attackers are forced wide, or the ball goes dead, then the 3 attackers become the new defenders and the defenders join one of attacking stations
Coaching Points
Delay - how can the defenders delay the progress of the attack?
- Quick recovery to get into an organised defensive shape
- Nearest player to the ball can take up a position in between the ball and the goal, not pressing too hard but also not giving the attacker too much space and time, allowing the other defenders time to recover
Deny - how can the defenders deny space / time for the attackers?
- Quick organisation and communication
- Take up positions to cut lines of passes or shooting opportunities
- Working as a unit as the ball travels
- Stay compact to reduce the chances of gaps appearing that the attackers can exploit
Dictate - how can the defenders influence how or where the ball goes?
- Body shape to show the attackers down the line or into wider positions

In Possession - Attacking Overload - 3v2 (15 mins) (15 mins)
3v2 Attacking Overload
The players are divided into two teams. Each team selects a forward who is always on the pitch (rotate this player after 3/4 goes). The remaining players are divided into pairs.
The team in the yellow kit attacks in a 3v2 situation.
Once the attack is completed, the two defenders in the blue kit make a counter attack to the opposite goal. Now this team can combine with their forward for a 3v2 situation against two new defenders.
Coaching points:
How can we utilise the extra player to effect?
Can we make the pitch bigger whilst in possesion?
Decision making when counter attacking, can we draw the defenders out of position?
Speed of movement with the ball, can we move it quickly & with purpose?
