Key Learning Outcomes
• 1st defender pressure the ball
• Get to defender quickly as the ball is moving
• Curved run to cut off penetration from attacking player
• Slow down as approach player (Arms distance away-touch tight-Knees Bent-Side on body shape)
• Body position slightly to one side of the ball
• Which way are you forcing the player (making play predictable, force onto weaker foot etc.)
• Patient waiting to win the ball
• Waiting for cue’s to win the ball (head up, bad touch etc.)
Seconary Learning Outcome
- 1v1 attacking
TECHNICAL - defending, dribbling, moves/turns, passing and receiving
TACTICAL - defense
PHYSICAL - agility, speed, quickness
PSYCHOLOGICAL - decision making, self-confidence
4 Defending rules
1) Close down - The player should get to the ball as fast as possible.
2) Break down - The player should start to take much smaller steps (shuffle) as they get near the ball. Now is the time to leave space
3) Get down - The player should bend the knees with chest over toes to get in a good athletic stance that will allow quick movements. Keep the feet moving.
4) Slow down - The player should slow the ball/opponent to one side to make them predictable. Come on the ball at an angle.

Organization:
- Same organization as previous slide, however players are in corners of the square, diagonal from each other as shown.
- One player with a ball.
Instructions (passive defender):
- Players play 5 passes back and forth to one another.
- On the 5th pass, the player receiving stops the ball and the passing player closes down (1)
- Once the defending player closes the space, the player with the ball dribbles while changing direction every few touches until they reach the opposite corner of the square (2)
- Once reaching the opposite corner, the defender retreats to opposite corner, player w/ ball plays pass and process repeats.
Coaching Points:
- Close space quickly, smaller/shorter steps as you approach defender. Can I get attacker's head down?
- Bent run: make play predictable
- Distance between player w/ ball and yourself: based on defender's / attacker's speed and quickness
- Jockey: how (body shape) / maintain comfortable distance - close enough to win ball if needed
- When to tackle / How to tackle
Progressions:
- Attacker takes heavy touch, defender wins ball
- Go live, attacker must touch cone w/ ball

Organization:
- 24x12 yds
- 4 players (2 nuetrals in defensive half (N) / 2 fully live)
Instructions:
- Players go to goal and can only use the nuetral in their defensive half (as shown)
- Play for 2 mintues, switch roles (physically demanding activity)
- Nuetrals cannot score
Coaching Points:
- Starting Position: Deny penetration, Close enough to pressure (judging distance), Body shape (see both attackers).
- Reading Body Shape: Head up / down (cannot see me, therefore I can close space as ball travels.
- Can I intercept pass?
- Can i cut nuetral out to create 1v1?
- Should I drop off?
- Returning to proper starting position if I allow pass back to nuetral.
- Can I squeeze poor pass back to nuetral and cut out live attacker (squeeze nuetral player)?
- Feint to cause bad touch / opportunity to win ball.
Progressions:
- Manipulation of touches by either attacker to reduce / increase speed of play or get defending scenario players need to work on.
- Unrestricted: 2v2

Players play 3v3 to maximize 1v1 confrontations and bring out the topic of indiviudal defening. Coaches could also include the addition of man to man marking within the scrimmage to force 1v1 defending and secondarlily to bring out 1v1 attacking skills and the confidence to take a player on
