MWTB - Quick Ball Carry with Change of Direction

  • Players run with the ball from the start line to the first cone.
  • They return with the ball to the start line and then run to the second cone (still with the ball).
  • They return to the start line and then run to the third cone, and back to the start line.
  • After two practice rounds, turn it into a race.
  • IMPORTANT: Encourage players to turn with the smallest turning circle possible.

MWTB - Quick Ball Carrying

  • Split group into two teams. Every player has a ball.
  • Players line up in a row, facing opposite directions.
  • On the coaches signal, all the players carry the ball until they cross a line 12m in front of them.
  • The team that gets all of their players and the ball over their line and UNDER CONTROL (stopped on the line) is the winner.
VARIATION
  • Make one team the dribblers and the other team the catchers, who try to prevent the dribblers from reaching their line.
  • Pair players up across the two teams so each catcher knows who they are chasing.
  • Start with catchers not having sticks. They catch a dribbler by tapping them on the shoulder - no pushing or hitting another player!
  • When you add sticks back in, you can play 'Rats & Rabbits':
  • Every player has a stick and ball. One team is the 'Rats' and the other team is the 'Rabbits'.
  • If you call 'Rats' they are the dribblers, and the Rabbits are the catchers.
  • If you call 'Rabbits' they are the dribblers, and the Rats are the catchers.
  • Avoid tackling, still just a tap on the shoulder - we are only focusing on quick ball carrying, which will happen when a player with the ball is being chased. We are not looking to take each other out!

Decathlon - Twice around the square

  • Players practice this exercise in pairs.
  • Two players, each with a ball, start in opposite corners of the square (6x6m).
  • The simultaneously start dribbling and run around the outside of the square twice (in the same direction).
  • Both players have two attempts, then swap partners.
  • Switch the direction with each new partner (ie, alternate between clockwise and anti-clockwise).
VARIATION
  • Players dribble once around the square once in one direction and then in the opposite direction once around the square, back to their starting position.
  • As long as players start on opposite corners, they shouldn't bump into each other!
OBJECTIVES
  • To dribble the ball at speed without losing control of it.
  • To use the appropriate dribbling technique when going in a straight line and when changing direction close to a cone.
  • When changing direction with the ball, first lower the centre of gravity and then push the body with a full extension of the outside leg in the new direction.
IMPORTANT
  • The ball should be kept half a stick length away from the feet when running in a straight line. This space is the 'Skill Space' and ise used for evading and changing direction.
  • When turning around the cones, the ball can come into the 'Skill Space' but should reposition as soon as the player runs straight again.
  • To change direction quicker the ball should move first around the cone and the body should be 'dragged along' behind it.

Decathlon - Twice around the square - Progression

  • For advanced players.
  • Two players start at the same time, at the same cone.
  • One player has a ball.
  • The player who is in control of the ball must dribble is along the triangular route (yellow cones), keeping to the outside of the cones.
  • Meanwhile, their opponent without the ball must run around the field marked by the four red cones with the aim of chasing the attacker and touching his ball before he can get back to his starting position.
  • Each player has two turns as attacker and two as defender.
  • The ball is dribbled in a clockwise direction once and then an anticlockwise direction once.
  • Whilst defending, the player learns to wait for the exact moment to tackle without touching the opponent's stick.
  • The winner is the player who manages to keep possession the most amount of times whilst running around the triangle.

MWTB - Quick Ball Carrying - Changing Squares

  • Split the groups into teams of 4.
  • All players have a ball.
  • Set up four 6x6m squares in a rectangular formation.
  • All the players move on the coach's signal (make it clear in which direction).
  • The whole team dribbles the ball to the next square.
  • The team to control all of their balls first in the square is the winner.
VARIATION
  • Put defenders between the squares who try to delay teams running with the balls.
  • If a defender wins possession of a ball they dribble it to the square where the attack was launched.
IMPORTANT
  • Use the forehand or reverse stick to change direction quickly according to what is necessary.
  • For even quicker changes of direction, move the ball where you want to go just before the body changes direction.

  • 2 min rounds.
  • 2 players (attackers) start from the halfway line and attack the 12m wide goal defended by one opponent.
  • To score, a player must dribble the ball across their opponent's goal line.
  • After a successful defence, the ball is passed by the defender to the other defender at the opposite goal, who dribbles it over the goal line.
  • If the attackers lost the ball in this scenario, they should tackle back to their own defending half of the pitch to try and win the ball back.
  • After 2 minutes, swap the attackers and defenders. Keep score for each 2 minute round.
  • Free hits should be taken no less than 3m from the end line.
  • Play 4 x 2 minutes and rotate one pair from each pitch to play new opponents.
