Principles of build up play
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & Set up:
- Set up is the same as the first block, rotation is the same, all's that's different is the pass
The pass is now the centre half breaking the line with the ball through to the CM, who then plays it underneath to the FB who then plays through to the Attacker, who then plays a wall pass with the CM
Up-back-through
Time:
4 min block
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & set up:
The CH now has a choice of either playing through to CM or out to FB. Rotations exactly the same as the first two blocks
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & set up
- Now a Centre Forward has been added to apply pressure and try to stop the entry pass or the outside pass
- The CH can choose to play through or out
- Rest of the in possession team just keep doing the same rotations
Coaching points:
- For the CF - Try to block a passing lane, once line is broke, they are done and retreat and get ready for next phase.
- For the FB and CM - try and make an angle to receive ball off CH
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & set up:
- Now add a 2nd line of pressure, now in the midfield
- Again, the CH can either play through or out
- Again, once their line is broke the CF and the CM just retreat for the next phase
Coaching points:
- Movement away from pole/marker needs to be a sharp burst and not too early
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation:
Only difference now is that the CF and CM are now live and can now chase from behind if line is broke
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & set up:
Split group into 2 groups of 7. 4v3 in each group, any remaining players can just be rotated in throughout.
The 4 will ideally consist of a CH, FB and 2 CM. The 3 can consist of a midfield 3 or an attacking 3 or a combination of both
Block 1:
-The Yellows will start in a mid block and try and not to be played through
-The Blues will try to combine to and try and find the overload and play through to score in mini goals
- If yellows regain possession, they counter and try and score in mini goals on other end.
Coaching points:
For blues - Find the overload
- Be patient
- Make use of decoy runs and rotations to disorganise the yellows
- If yellows are in a mid block - step in and advance to try and pin them back further
For yellows - Defend compact and narrow
- Closest man presses the ball and then retreats if ball travels into another channel
- Be ready to counter quickly if regaining possession
Block 2:
Yellow team now defend in a high block
Coaching points:
For blues - If opposition pressing high, try to find the space in behind either around or over the press.
- Ball has to be moved quicker now as there will be less time on the ball
For yellows - Press immediately and aggressively
3rd block:
Yellows will now have the choice of playing in a mid or high block - MUST now communicate and coach each other.
Time:
3x5 min blocks
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation & set up:
- Blues set up in a 1-4-3-1 (No wingers)
- Yellows set up with a midfield 5 and 1 centre forward
However players can be added/subtracted depending on numbers
Blues have to build out from the back and try to break the lines to score in the minigoals
Yellows have to defend and counter attack big goal when regaining possession
Block 1:
-Yellows will defend in a mid block and are not allowed to press until it comes into the midfield zone.
- One of the blue CH has to stay outside the last line on the build up to provide support for a recycled ball. If one CH steps in, the other must retreat out.
Block 2:
- Yellows must now press high and apply fast pressure on the CH
- If the yellows are pressing high, one of the blue CM drops in to be the additional CH to overload opposition press
Block 3:
- Cones are removed and now the yellows have the option on how to press. They must now have the responsibility of communicating and coaching each other.
Time:
3x6 minute blocks

Build up principles block 1 (5 mins)
Organisation:
- 14 players
- 2 grids, 2 balls
- 1 player on each pole, the rest in between the two grids who will be flowing through the practice
Set up:
- Ball goes into Centre Half who pops off the pole to receive on back foot
- CH plays the ball to Full Back who receives on back foot on the outside and plays inside to CM
- CM receives on the inside and plays a quick 1-2 with the Attacker
- Attacker then just retreats to the back of the line of the group in the middle and the player at the front of the queue begins the process again. Once a sequence is completed, on their next go, they play out the other side.
- Players follow their pass
Coaching points:
- Quality on the pass
- Movement off the pole has to be late and fast
Time:
4 min block
