Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Technical focus on the technique of defending following shuttling across.
Technical Tactical
Focuses on team shape out of possession.
Technical Physical
Session timeline implemented to help add physical element.
Technical Psychological
Scoring system; point for a goal for attacking team, a point for successfully shuttling across and winning possession for the defensive team. Extra point if the defensive team manage to successfully make 5 passes.
Technical Social
Give each team a captain who will count points and will also lead team meetings where strengths and weaknesses of performance will be discussed.

Small sided game. (25 mins)

Session Design:

Organisation:

- defence vs attack in 7v7; greens the attacking team, reds the defensive team.

- the attacking team's aim is to create chances from switching the play, using maximum width in attack.

- the defensive team's aim is to shuttle across effectively and defend adequately when there.

- every member of the defensive team must shuttle across to the ball side when the ball is switched.

- the attacking team will always have a man on the far side to ensure they have a switching outlet, and that the defensive team must shuttle across to apply pressure to the player in space.

- to prevent constant shuttling, the attacking team must spend at least 8 seconds in one side of the pitch (game realistic).

- new game begins when ball has gone out of play, a goal has been scored or the defensive team regain possession and complete 5 passes.

Progressions/Regressions:

1. Progression: The defensive team have 5 seconds to shuttle across to the ball side.

2. Progression: The attacking team must only spend 6 seconds in one half before switching; will result in more switching to find the free man on far side.

1. Regression: At least four out of the defensive team must shuttle across, rather than six. Will provide greater horizontal coverage at all times.

Planned Interventions

- Coaching process focusing on the technique of defending one v one once pressure has been applied to attacker following shuttle.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Technical focus on the technique of defending following shuttling across.
Technical Tactical
Off the ball information will be given regarding how each defender should approach attacker and the triggers to try to tackle.
Technical Physical
Physical element is added when the players shuttle across. Distances between two pitches can be increased or decreased in accordance to physical needs, i.e., if it is becoming too challenging, decrease distance between two, to decrease shuttle distance.
Technical Psychological
Points scoring system for each team will provide motivation for players (psychologcial element).
Technical Social
Player ownership of counting scores and points.

Skill practice. (10 mins)

Session design:

Organisation:

- Each team will line up in front of one of the mini goals.

- Each player will have a ball, and will dribble towards the goal and try to beat the defender in order to score.

- After a goal is scored, or after the ball is out of play, the player must shuttle over to the opposite half to defend 1v1 against an opposition attacker.

- This opposition attacker must try to score, and then shuttle over to defend another one v one.

- Attackers can begin dribbling when defender has entered the half.

- Once players have defended, they join the back of the queue on the side of the pitch they are in.

- Overall a fast paced practice focusing on shuttling.

Progressions/Regressions:

1. Progression - Two players go at a time, making it 2v2's rather than 1v1's.

2. Progression - Attackers can begin to dribble when opponent on other pitch has dribbled/shot into goal; will place more emphasis on shuttling across quickly to apply pressure.

Coaching Interventions

Coaching process to show the players the technique of defending 1v1.

Fly by with a player on how quickly they should shuttle across.

Drive by with player to instruct how to approach the attacker when they have possession.
