The following session revolves around the technique of diving for goalkeepers. This is a very important for goalkeepers to be able to correctly use and utilise within a game, and can take some time to properly master the technique. Each of the training drills below aim to help the keepers to better understand why goalkeepers dive, the technique behind the dive and also gives the players an opportunity to properly practice and demonstrate the skill.
The warmups aim to get the goalkeepers ready for the session, whilst re-capping the topic of the week before. There are two main sessions included within this practice, and both are aimed at helping young goalkeepers to better understand the technique of diving.
For this session, I was given the topic of diving by my club, and asked to plan a session for 5-11 year olds. From doing a session with the group the week before, I know I should expect around 12 players in total for this session. I also know to expect another 2 experienced coaches for this session too, to help guide me through the session, whilst also stepping in at any point if they see the reason, or if they feel that I should go over a specific point with the group. They will also help me to keep the group organised, and help with demonstrations.

Description
The goalkeepers for the second part of the warmup will be looking at recapping the subject of the lesson from the week before, with some work on 'W' and 'Scoop' catches
Challenges
When signalled to by the coach, the players must find someone else to swap footballs with, performing some form of a 'W' catch, or a 'scoop' catch
Interventions
Try to get the keepers to engage with the beginning of the session. Get all of the ready for the intensity of the session, and an intensity that is expected to help the session to flow well
Equipment
Use the red square area already marked out on the pitch. Players will need to stand across from their partner in a straight line, and will need a ball each
Interventions
I will try to use fly by's and drive by's to try and keep the session flowing as well as possible, and only really step in with a demonstration if I see it to be necessary.

Technical Players are repeating the skill of diving |
|
Tactical Diving is an essential part of goalkeeping, and will be needed to be used within game situations |
|
Physical Players are using specific muscles in order to perform a dive |
|
Psychological Players are given a chance to consistently repeat a drill, giving them the chance to build their confidence during the drill |
|
Social Players are interacting with each other, and are learning from each other as they go |
Aims
This first drill aims to ease the players into diving, whilst breaking down all of the key components to help them to clearly understand what is needed and expected from the dive, and allow the goalkeepers to demonstrate this skill at a lower tempo
Description
The goalkeeper will start this practice on their knees, and collapse onto their side, performing a low dive to their side. They will then get up onto their feet and perform the low diving save from their feet. This two phase approach allows the goalkeepers to first perform the skill from an easier stance, and then apply this afterwards into a full dive.
Targets
The goalkeepers will be aiming to get between 3-5 effective sets of diving saves within this practice.
Conditions
Players must perform the fist dive from their knees, before getting up and performing the second dive from their feet
Challenges
Get the players to see if they can correctly use the diving technique within the practice each time they dive
Interventions
I will try to use fly by's and drive by's to try and keep the session flowing as well as possible, and only really step in with a demonstration if I see it to be necessary.
Equipment
A goal, and one ball

Aims
This second practice is an extension of the first set practice. This drill aims to build upon the first practice, and advance the goalkeepers players diving, whilst breaking down all of the key components to help them to clearly understand what is needed and expected from the dive, and allow the goalkeepers to demonstrate this skill at a higher tempoDescription
This second practice is a continuation of the first practice. The goalkeepers in this particular session will make a full low diving save, before having to jump over an obstacle for their second diving save, performing a much higher save.Targets
The goalkeepers will be aiming to get between 3-5 effective sets of diving saves within this practice.
Conditions
The goalkeepers within this practice much jump over an obstacle in order to make their second diving save.Challenges
Challenge the keepers to complete as many correct diving saves as possible during the session
Interventions
I will try to use fly by's and drive by's to try and keep the session flowing as well as possible, and only really step in with a demonstration if I see it to be necessary.

Warm-Up Part 1 (5 mins)
Aims
This warmup drill aims to get the goalkeepers ready for the session, working with footwork and handling to do.
Description
The goalkeepers will have a football each, and will have a square in which they must run around in, bouncing the ball from hand to hand. Some interventions will be used to help progress the warm-up drill along with conditions. One such condition will be that the players must find someone else within the group to swap footballs with, performing some form of a 'W' catch, or a 'scoop' catch.
Target
Within this warm-up, there won't be much use of targets for the players
Challenges
When signalled to by the coach, the players must find someone else to swap footballs with, performing some form of a 'W' catch, or a 'scoop' catch
