Coach Task 6 (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Shaded area set up between the penalty area and centre circle (40x18) 3 reds v 3 blues in this area.
  • Red lines either side of the shaded area represent a channel, 7 yards wide of the edge of the shaded area and all the way to the touchline, a common player in each channel.
  • Striker positions himself in the penalty area.
  • Balls placed in the centre circle where the coach starts the practice.

Explanation

Block 1 - 5 minutes

Coach passes a ball into the shaded area where reds and blues play a possession game, once either team have made 3 successful passes they must look to find one of the common players in either channel, on receiving the ball the yellow player must break down the channel and pass/cross the ball into the striker who then has a shot at goal, a first time finish is three points, if they take a touch before shooting its just one point.

Block 2 - 5 Minutes

The same as block one however on completing 3 passed the reds/blues can now pass directly into the striker without using the channel. Channel can still be used. Focus on striker creating angles to recieve the ball in order to finish quickly.

Block 3 - 5 minutes

Same as block 2 but a defender and second striker are introduced to the penalty area.

Key Factors

  • Common players in channel are unopposed and should look to get the ball forward as quickly as possible.
  • In blocks one and two the striker is unopposed and should focus on getting shots off on target at every opportunity.
  • Decision making for striker, although 3 points are on offer for a one time finish the key factor of the practice is to ensure the ball gets in the back of the net as much as possible.
  • Strikers position and movement is key, use the width of the 6 yard box as a guide to maximise goal scoring opportunity.
  • In block 3 strikers should look to work together against the defender to create an opportunity, communication key - One striker pins the defender and holds the ball up to create space for the other.
  • Possession part of the drill needs to be managed in order to create quick tempo
  • Each time the ball goes dead from an opportunity for the striker the play starts again with possession box.
