Setup:
Explanation:In this 3v1 drill, the attacking players aim to maintain possession and create passing angles to break down the defender. The defender works hard to win the ball back. Once the defender wins possession, the player who made the mistake (lost the ball) must go back into the defensive position.

Passing Practice Setup
Equipment Required: Balls, bibs, cones, agility poles
Organization:
Set up a passing drill using cones and agility poles to create lanes and zones. Assign players A, B, C, and D to their respective positions.
Practice Sequence:
Player A initiates the drill by passing the ball to Player B.
Player B receives and quickly plays the ball to Player C.
Player C controls and delivers a well-weighted through ball to Player D, who times their run to receive in stride.
Coaching Points:
Emphasize quality of passing (accuracy, pace, and timing).
Focus on body positioning when receiving and passing.
Encourage communication and movement off the ball.
Player D should time their run to stay onside and arrive at the optimal moment.

Session Objective
"To develop the team’s ability to transition the ball effectively from the defensive third to the attacking third by playing through, around, or over a 2-5-3-1 defensive structure. Focus will be on positional rotations and support play to progress the ball with control and purpose."
Tactical Detail
Scenario: Once the left-sided centre-back (LCB) is in possession, the full-back inverts into midfield, occupying an interior role (e.g., a single pivot or dual pivot depending on shape), creating a midfield overload. Simultaneously, the left winger drops into a deeper wide position to maintain width and offer support in the first phase of build-up.
This movement aims to disrupt the opponent's 2-5-3-1 pressing structure by:
Creating central overloads
Dragging opposition wingbacks/forwards out of position
Opening space in the wide or half-space channels for progression
Key Coaching Points
1. Full-Back Inversion
Timing: Invert after the LCB has secure possession and the passing lane into midfield is open.
Body shape: Open stance to receive on the half-turn and play forward or switch.
Scanning: Check shoulder to assess pressure and options before moving inside.
Positioning: Occupy space between opposition midfield and forward lines to receive and play through pressure.
2. Winger Support Movement
Dropping deeper: Creates a supporting angle for the LCB and relieves pressure in the wide area.
Width maintenance: Stretches the opposition horizontally, providing space for the inverted full-back or central midfielders.
Quick combinations: Be ready for 1-2s or third-man runs to advance the ball beyond the first line of pressure.
3. Centre-Back Decision-Making
Trigger recognition: Identify the right moment to progress the ball (e.g., when the winger has dropped and full-back has inverted).
Distribution: Play into the inverted full-back, central midfielders, or find the winger depending on pressure and space.
Composure: Stay calm under pressure, using disguise or feints to manipulate pressing players.
4. Midfield Structure
Balance: Ensure one midfielder stays to cover if the full-back inverts.
Support angles: Create diagonal lines of support to provide options for progression or recycle under pressure.
Tempo: Quick circulation of the ball to exploit shifting defensive blocks.

POSSETIONING GAME TRANSTIONG THE BALL THROUGH THIRDS THIS IS WHERE WE CAN WORK ON INVERTING OUR FULL BACKS INTO THE MIDFILDER TO CREAT AN OVERLOAD TO BE ABLE TO BEAT A 3,4,4,2 PRESS ONCE WE INVERT CAN THE WINGER DROP LEVEL OUT SIDE AND CREAT A 2V1

Positional Possession Game: Progressing Through the Thirds & Overcoming High Press
Tactical Focus:
Develop team ability to transition the ball through the thirds under pressure, using positional rotations — particularly the inversion of fullbacks — to create central overloads and beat a 2-5-3-1 pressing structure.
Professional Description:
“This positional possession game focuses on transitioning through the thirds with purpose and control. The key tactical emphasis is on inverting fullbacks into central midfield to create numerical superiority against a 2-5-3-1 high press. Upon inversion, wide attackers are encouraged to drop outside on a different line, creating 2v1 scenarios against the opposition’s wingbacks or pressing midfielders to facilitate forward progression.”
Tactical Principles:
Inversion of Fullbacks:
Fullbacks move into interior midfield channels to provide central options and create overloads (e.g., 4v3 or 5v4 in midfield).
This helps disrupt the opposition’s press and occupy central markers.
Promotes fluidity and numerical superiority in build-up zones.
Winger Rotation & Support:
Winger adjusts positioning by dropping deeper and wider when the fullback inverts.
This rotation creates a 2v1 on the outside, allowing the team to bypass pressing wingbacks or midfielders.
Ensures wide options are still available despite fullback inversion.
Breaking the Press (vs 2-5-3-1):
The central overload forces the front three or five in the press to collapse inward, freeing space either:
Between the lines, or
In wide areas for progression.
Quick, purposeful movement and passing patterns are essential to exploit the moment of imbalance.
Transitioning Through Thirds:
Ball must be circulated efficiently to shift the press and identify the optimal entry point into midfield.
Once progression is made into the middle third, maintain tempo and look to connect with advanced midfielders or the #9 between the lines.
Coaching Points:
Fullbacks:
Time inversion based on the pressing shape and midfield positioning.
Receive side-on, scan for forward options, and support quick combinations.
Communicate clearly with the winger to trigger outside support.
Wingers:
Recognize when to drop and offer width and passing lane outside the press.
Play with awareness – can you combine quickly, turn, or drive forward?
Stay level or just below the ball to support the inverted fullback.
Midfielders (#6, #8, #10):
Rotate fluidly to maintain overloads and disrupt pressing triggers.
Use third-man combinations to progress centrally.
Body shape should always allow forward reception and quick transitions.
Centre Backs & GK:
Be calm in possession; invite pressure intelligently to open up space.
Prioritize progressive passes into midfield overloads or switch play when central options are blocked.
Success Indicators:
The team can beat the 2-5-3-1 press consistently using central or wide overloads.
Fullbacks invert at the right moments, contributing to midfield dominance.
