Description

In this pre-season session the concept of a striker initiating a high press when the opposition is attempting to play out from the back from goal kick scenarios. Players will learn the pressing triggers, pressing aggressively as a collective and setting traps to assist in winning the ball high up the pitch. By performing the high press successfully it will enable us to win the ball in dangerous areas and create meaningful goal scoring opportunities.

Key Principle: Deny time and space for the opposition to build up

Session Objective: In this session I aim to improve the team's ability to press collectively high up the pitch to force the opposition into mistakes in their defensive third. This will enable us to win the ball in dangerous areas and create goal scoring opportunities through quick, direct passing and surging support play.

PP (20 mins)

Organisation:

4v4+4 in a 25m x 30m area. BPO team attempt to win the ball as high up the pitch as possible and play as quickly as they can to their target player at the opposite end of the pitch. BPO team to remain compact and in their half until a mistake made then enter the area collectively and press. BP attempt to play through to their target player limited to 3 touch. Teams work for 1 minute then change the teams in the middle. All neutrals are restricted to three touches.

Variation/Progression:

- Goals worth more depending where on the pitch the ball won (front half 2 points, back half 1 point)

- Two wide neutrals added into the middle (restricted to two touch)

- Remove BPO team restriction

Team Tasks:

Win the ball as high up the pitch as possible to create scoring chances.

Player Tasks:

- Protect the centre of the pitch by remaining compact to prevent the ball being played forward into midfield (allowing them out)

- Be patient and force them to play into wide corridor then press creating a 2v1 overload on wide player after applying pressure to force the mistake and the player performing a pressing cue.

- Be close enough to press the player you are responsible for whilst also covering as much of the pitch as possible by cutting passing lanes (Wingers for FB's, mids for mids, ST's for CB's)

- When press initiated look to intercept first, win 50/50 second, force backwards third

- Maintain compact BPO shape if trap does not work and wait for trigger to press (ball in wide area, slow pass, backward pass, receiving ball facing back)

Coaching Cues:

- Step 1: When the BP team have controlled possession and are organised, protect central areas and maintain/get into BPO shape.

- Step 2: Apply pressure to force mistake by cutting out immediate passing options when the following triggers occur (long pass, square or backwardspass, back to goal, heavy backwards touch, opposition head down (receiving orpassing), slow passes backwards/sideways, difficult to control pass (in theair, poor surface).

- Step 3: Win the ball when playerisolated (especially side-line) or when we have numerical overload when thefollowing cues occur - long pass, square or backwards pass, back to goal, heavy backwards touch, head down opposition (receiving or passing), slow passes backwards/sideways, difficult to control pass

- When the ball is in the widest corridor, our entire team should occupy the 3 corridors nearest the ball

- When the press is initiated by a player, EVERYONE must react and press collectively at 100% intensity

Organisation:

5v5+2+2 GK in a 35m x 50m area (end zones 15m long, middle third 20m long). BPO team try to win the ball as high up the pitch as possible to score a goal. BP team attempt to play the ball from one end of the pitch to the other to score a goal. The sweepers are restricted to their defensive third, limited to three touches and can't be tackled. When in BPO players must only mark their opposite number.

Variation/Progression:

- Goals worth more depending on where you win it on the pitch (attacking third 3 points, middle third 2 points and defensive third 1 point.)

- Remove man marking restriction (zonal marking)

- Sweepers can be tackled

Team Tasks:

Win the ball as high up the pitch as possible to create scoring chances.

Player Tasks:

- Protect the centre of the pitch by remaining compact to prevent the ball being played forward

- When BP player receives with their back to goal in wide area this is our trigger to press

- When the sweeper takes their third touch this is a cue to play tight on our players to force them backwards

- Once player has been forced to take their first touch backwards, do not let them turn

- Step 1: Protect central areas and maintain/get into BPO shape when the BP team have controlled possession and are organised

- Step 2: Apply pressure to force mistake by cutting out immediate passing options then win the ball once passing lanes covered when the following triggers occur (long pass, square or backwards pass, back to goal, heavy backwards touch, opposition head down (receiving or passing), slow passes backwards/sideways, difficult to control pass (in theair, poor surface).

- When the ball is in the widest corridor, our entire team should occupy the 3 corridors nearest the ball

Striker Press (25 mins)

Organisation:

7v5+2 GK in a half with the pitch divided into 5 corridors and a 15m deep end zone. Play starts with the white team GK attempting to play out from the back to either release the 2/5 to dribble through one of the wide gates. If the black team wins the ball by pressing they score as normal. The recovery team gets 3 points for a goal if they score within 8 seconds of winning the ball.

Variation/Progression:

- BP team must score by passing to the 2/5 after they have ran through run of the gates (timed runs)

- BP can score by passing to 2/5 running through gate OR by 2/5 dribbling ball through the gate.

- Add time limit for possession team to score a point

- Player who passes the ball to the 2/5 on the possession team into the end zone can enter end zone to create 2v1 vs GK.

Team Tasks:

Win the ball as high up the pitch as possible to create scoring chances.

Player Tasks:

Centre Mids (6/8):

- Protect the centre of the pitch by cutting passing lanes to ST from direct pass when the ball is central

- Responsible for the two midfielders closest to the ball when the ball is in the widest 2 corridors

- Be positioned close enough to your player to intercept forward pass/win the ball in 50/50 or force their first touch backwards

- Maintain BPO shape until pressing trigger identified and react immediately

Wingers (7/11):

- Protect the centre of the pitch by operating in the wide central corridor when the ball is central, closing passing lanes forward to central midfielders

- Responsible for closing the FB down when the ball is played to your side whilst cutting out forward passing lanes back in field

- Press when the ball is travelling from the CB to the FB on your side either intercept forward pass/win the ball in 50/50 or force their first touch backwards

- Tuck in and be positioned half way between far side CB and far side CM (close enough to cover either if the play is switched or long ball) when the ball is in the widest channel on the opposite side of the field

- Maintain BPO shape until pressing trigger identified and react immediately

Strikers (9/10):

- Protect the centre of the pitch by operating in the 3 central corridors when the ball is central, closing passing lanes forward to central midfielders

- ST nearest to CB receiving the ball presses from outside in, far side ST halves pitch and lane to CDM

- ST who pressed CB  continues to press the FB receiving the ball (to create 2v1) whilst the far side striker marks the near side centre back cutting out the switch to the far side CB.

- Maintain BPO shape until pressing trigger identified (ball in widest corridor, slow pass, backward pass, receiving ball facing backwards) and react immediately

Coaching Cues:

- Step 1: When the BP team have controlled possession and are organised, protect central areas and maintain/get into BPO shape

- Step 3: Win the ball when playerisolated (especially side-line) or when we have numerical overload when thefollowing cues occur - long pass, square or backwards pass, back to goal, heavybackwards touch, head down opposition (receiving or passing), slow passesbackwards/sideways, difficult to control pass

- When the ball is in the widest corridor, our entire team should occupy the 3 corridors nearest the ball

- When the press is initiated by a player, EVERYONE must react and press collectively at 100% intensity
