Aim
To Teach the technique of a simple pass in rugby and to make sure that participents perform the skill correctly and consistantly.
Objectives
1. To break down the skill of passing to ensure the small details are done correctly
2. To rebuild the skill up and make sure it is performed correctly under pressure.
3. To improve game awareness of when to properly use the skill effectively.
Client Group
16 players from ages of 17 to 30 of different skill levels. Mostly rugby beginners.
Equipment
8 yellow bibs, 8 blue bibs, 40 cones (10 yellow, 10 blue, 20 red), 8 rugby balls

Organizational / Instructions
Have each team line up in 3 lines on opposite sides of the pitch.
Give a ball to each line of players (Max 5 balls out)
Coaching Points
Staggered starts.
Can only throw the ball back to a teammate.
Must keep moving when passing.
Make sure you get spin on the ball to keep pass straight.
Follow through with arms pointing to the target.
Progressions / Adaptations
Speed up run to force quicker passes.
Change direction the passes start at (instead of left to right do right to left)
Add a passive defender

Organizational / Instructions
Each team lines up in 3 rows on opposite sides of the pitch.
One team with go with their passes down the hall while the other team must try and intercept the passes
Coaching Points
Staggered starts.
Can only throw the ball back to a teammate.
Must keep moving when passing.
Make sure you get spin on the ball to keep pass straight.
Follow through with arms pointing to the target.
Focus on timing the interceptions rather than forcing them
If the other team gets the ball they must reach the opposite end of the pitch without losing the ball.
Progressions / Adaptations
Speed up the runs to force faster passing while also forcing the defenders to act quicker.
Reduce the width of the area to create a tighter space to work in.

Remove some cones to create a smaller space.
Have the teams line up in 2's
each pair on the yellow team get a ball.
Coaching Points
Remember to follow through with your pass to ensure it reaches its target.
Spin the ball to keep it straight.
Always Pass it backward.
Time interceptions.
If the blue team gets the ball they must try to get to the opposite end of the Pitch.
Progressions / Adaptations
Decrease the width of the Area and increase the length of the area to create a thinner, longer corridor to pass around.

Use the Full width of the Pitch.
Set up End Zones
Must make 10 successful passes before heading to the end zone.
Coaching Points
If touched by an opponents 2 hands you must pass the ball
Point arms-on follow-through of where you want the ball to go.
Spin the ball on release to keep straight.
Progressions / Adaptations
5 minute game, or first team to score 5 points

Organizational / Instructions
Have the players jog around the pitch, slowing down as they go into a walk,
Keep hands above the head when walking.
Deep breaths.
Form a circle around the center of the pitch
Coaching Points
when in the circle call out different players to show a stretch for the rest to copy.
Hold the stretch for 15 seconds on each side.
Repeat this process till each muscle has been stretched.

Bib up the players into teams for later on.

Keep head up.

Look around to see where others are.

Add in actions relating to numbers.
1. Touch the ground with both hands
2. Sidestep 5 steps on each side.
3. High five the next person you run past.
