Warm Up - Shooting in the box

ORGANISATION:
  • 1x 20m by 10m box split in to 8 equal grid squares
  • One player in each box
  • 4 goals on the longer sideline, roughly 5m in from the short sideline

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Players are split in to two teams of 4 and separated by a halfway line from short edge to short edge
  • Players will stay in their boxes while on defence, the attacking side is split in half rather than quarters
  • Once the ball goes out or a goal is scored, possession changes sides

COACHING POINTS:

  • Defenders focus on cover, with a player up front and one behind defending the goal
  • Can the defenders communicate while the ball is moving to have a point and cover player
  • Making sure the attacking team has no clear attacking lines to either goals

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Once the players are consistently defending remove a line separating players on each team, so attackers have free movement, and defenders are two to a half of their side of the field.

Drill 1 - 4V2 into 3v1+Gk

ORGANISATION:
  • Set up field as wide as the goal box and 30m long
  • Mark second line at the apex of the goal box semi-circle
  • Set 3 defenders and 4 attackers in different bibs inside the box to start
  • Defenders swap out after 2-3 rotations
  • Offside is in play

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Ball is passed in by the coach for a 4v2 game in Zone 1

  • Every player on the attacking team must touch the ball, then 3 players can enter Zone 2 and shoot at goal
  • One defender stays in the goal box and can defend as normal once the attacking team enters
  • Goalkeeper starts on their line but once attackers enter the goalie plays as normal
  • If defending team wins the ball they can shoot and score on small goals

COACHING POINTS:

  • Make use of the break away and convert it in to a shot as quickly as possible
  • Using shooting techniques practised in the Warm Up while moving with the ball and having a live defender (time pressure)

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Once the attacking team enters Zone 2 the defenders can run around the small goals and make a recovery run to the goal box to defend as normal.  This adds more time pressure to the attackers to convert the breakaway in to a shot

  • Limit of two touches in both zones unless shooting

  • Can only use non-dominant foot to shoot in zone 2
