Arrival Activity

Dribble and Tag:

  • As players arrive, have them dribble around a small, marked area 20x30 yds (using cones or lines) with a ball.
  • One or two coaches or players are "taggers" without a ball.
  • Players must avoid being tagged while dribbling, and if they get tagged, they do 5 toe-touches (on their ball) before continuing.
  • This helps the kids get their energy out right away while practicing dribbling and evading.
Coaching Points:

  • How can we use different parts of our feet to change direction or change speed? Use the inside, outside, pinky toe.
  • How can we avoid other players? Pick our head up and scan the field.

Activity 1

Dribble Adventure (10 minutes)

  • Players dribble their ball across the field, avoiding “obstacles” (cones, bibs, or other players).
  • Coach calls out actions like: Fast feet” (dribble quickly) Turtle dribble” (slow dribble) Switch (stop and swap balls with another player)

Progression:

  • If a player's ball touches an obstacle they have to start over.
  • Time them to see how long it takes to get to the other side, see if they can beat their previous time.

Regression: Remove the obsicles and see who can have the most touches on the ball to the other side.

Coaching points:

  • How can we avoid the obstacles? Pick our head up and scan.
  • How can we control the ball when we want to change directions? Use different parts of our feet.

Activity 2

 Freeze Tag (10 minutes)

  • One or two players (or coaches) are “taggers” without a ball.
  • Everyone else dribbles their ball around the field.
  • If tagged, players must freeze with their foot on the ball until another player unfreezes them by kicking the ball between the legs.

Progression:

Instead of tagging, the taggers must now take possession of their ball and kick it out of bounds.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage awareness- Keep your head up to see the whole picture.
  • Dribble under pressure- Protect the ball and find empty Space.
  • Teamwork- Can you help save our teammates from being frozen? Let's work together to make it harder for the taggers, and keep more players in the game.

Activity 3

Goal Scoring Fun! (10 minutes)

  • Set up small goals (or cones as goals).
  • Players have a number that matches the opponent.
  • The coach will call out that number and the players will dribble toward the goal and take a shot. They will be going at the same time in a race to the goal.

Make it fun with different ways to score:

-One big kick

-Use your pinky toe (inside foot finish)

-Pass before shot, call out two numbers.

Progression:

One ball is played in from the coach and the players 1v1 or 2v2 to goal.

Coaching points:

  • Can we be first to react and go to goal? We must be paying attention to hear our number to be first out. The best situation we can be in is a 1v0.

Small-Sided Game (10 minutes)

  • 3v3 or 4v4 games (no goalkeepers). Larger teams will need two fields going at once.
  • Encourage spacing and taking turns dribbling and passing.
  • Let them play with minimal coaching—focus on fun and positive reinforcement!
Coaching Points: Try to tie everything discussed through out the session. 1) Dribbling technique 2) Keeping our head up to scan 3) Fast decisions and reactions.

Closing & Team Cheer (5 minutes)

  • Gather players for a quick chat.
  • Ask: “What was your favorite part today?”
  • Praise effort over skill (e.g., “I loved how you kept trying!”).
  • End with a team cheer: “1-2-3, Soccer!”
