King of the Court Activation Game

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 20 x 20 box split into 4 squares as shown
  • 1 GK in each square
  • Use tall cones or net to split the court into 2 halves

Instructions/Explanations:

  • 1 GK in each square
  • Aim is to get to square 4 which is the king position
  • GK in square 1 always serves with a half volley
  • Can serve across into box 3 or 4 (but not laterally into box 2 initially)
  • GK in box 3 or 4 can then return into box 1 or 2
  • 1 bounce is allowed in your box before you must return ball across the net
  • If you kick ball out of play, hit the net or allow a double bounce in your square then you lose that rally
  • The GK that loses the rally has to drop to box 1. All other GKs move up 1 square i.e. box 1 to box 2 or box 3 to king
  • Every rally that you survive as king you score 1 point (Highest points total wins)

Progression(s)

  • Can warm up with passing sequences using hands and feet
  • Game progressions:

    - Feet (2 touch limit)

    - Return with hand to feet (2 touch)

    - Return with feet to hand (2 touch)

    - Double hand return/ Double alternate hand return

    - No bounce

  • Server at box 1 can serve into box 2 as well. Players do not need to return over the net but can play into the box next to them to increase decision making options/ awareness promote tracking and following play at all times

Technical Practice into Game-Related

Organisation/ Set Up:

  • 1 GK in goal
  • Out of possession: 2 x CBs that have split
  • 1x CDM

    Instructions/Explanations:

    Option 1:

  • Receive pass back from central feeder and distribute to CB
  • Recover deep for low central feed
  • Repeat opposite side

    Option 2:

  • Receive pass back from central feeder and play onto opposite full back i.e. receive LCB and clip to RB / play through to CDM
  • Move across goal to support opposite side and set for strike on angle

    Option 3:

  • Central strike from floor to start
  • If hold distribute to one of CBs with roll
  • CB plays across to opposite CB or CDM who become Winger/ who have 3 touches to strike

    Option 4:

  • Receive from CB and Clip into number #10 (CAM)
  • CAM can then play into striker or wingers who can combine to create attacking scenarios i.e. combination on edge of box, through ball for #9, drive to by line for cutback

Progression(s):

  • Option 4 becomes a live game 3V1 with 1 active CB as defender (add mini goals for defender to drive to when they win possession)

    Coaching points/learning objectives:

  • Recognising dangers when in possession

  • Location around goal when receiving back pass; responding to the situation as it develops (Where should I be/ Who is a threat?)
  • Efficient movement and scanning pre and post action
  • Quickest path to the ball/ effective deceleration to set
  • Technical efficiency and decision making (In and out of possession)

Game-Related Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 goals set up as shown 3-4m distance apart)
  • Gate (1 cone set centrally for each goal to represent CB)
  • 1x #9 positioned beside gate
  • 2x players edge of box (Replicating midfielders arriving late to edge of box or possibly inverted wingers)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Ball starts with feeder between 2 goals
  • Feeder plays to #9 who can finish 1 touch in either goal
  • Edge of box midfielders then strike towards the opposite goal
  • Play every ball to a finish
  • #9 can vary movements i.e. running across cone to replicate near post run across CB or peel off and drift to back post area (blind side)
  • Edge of box midfielders can combine and link up with #9 on second feed as progression
  • Initial feed can also be varied i.e. under arm throw for headed finish

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Do not cheat/ over commit on initial position at near post - increased movement required and less reaction time to make a save if ball is cut back/ squared
  • Pulsing ready to move on balls of feet
  • Importance of scanning pre and post feed; location of #9 will determine feetwork used by GK i.e. front post run cross under step better to square up to strike and maintain depth for reaction time/ back post run will require fast movement to get across goal
  • Set upon triggers (even if out of position- better chance to make save); hands in front of body ready to move and react
  • Track second feed across goal (equivalent of ball being squared)- deflected ball may direct to your goal
  • Technical efficiency and decision making (attack cross or drop off to increase reaction time?)
