This 15-minute high-intensity possession warm-up is played in a 25x25m grid (adjustable for player numbers). Two uneven teams compete to keep possession and score by completing pass sequences involving their goalkeeper. A neutral “bouncer” in a different coloured bib supports the team in possession to maintain fluidity despite uneven numbers. The coach feeds in all balls to ensure quick restarts, players do not retrieve out-of-play balls. Teams play to a target score (e.g., first to 5 or 10 points), adding a competitive edge. The focus is on sharp passing, fast transitions, and immediate pressing, helping players activate both physically and mentally while reinforcing key team principles.

Activation Warm-Up: High-Intensity Possession Game
Duration: 15 minutes
Purpose: Physical and mental activation through competitive, directional possession with structured transitions and pressing
Organisation:
Area: 25m x 25m grid (adjustable based on numbers)
Teams: 2 teams — can be even or uneven
If teams are uneven, add a neutral bouncer in a third colour bib to support the team in possession
Goalkeepers: 1 per team, positioned at opposite ends (outside the grid or within player zone as needed)
Equipment: 12 balls – coach feeds all balls (players do not retrieve)
Objective:
Maintain possession and transition the ball from one end of the grid to the other
Use teammates, the neutral bouncer (if in play), and the goalkeeper to complete the sequence
Scoring: 1 point for each successful end-to-end pass sequence involving both the bouncer and the goalkeeper
First team to 5 or 10 points wins
How to Play:
Game starts with coach feeding the ball into the grid
Possession team builds up and plays through to their goalkeeper
Goalkeeper distributes the ball back into play using their feet
If inside the player zone, goalkeepers may receive a chipped pass or pick up the ball with hands
Neutral bouncer (if used) supports only the team in possession
Both teams work to complete the same directional objective, transitioning the ball to their respective goalkeeper
Play restarts immediately on any ball out — no time lost collecting
Rotate neutral bouncer every 2 minutes
Coaching Points:
Tempo: Maintain sharp ball movement
Support Play: Create angles and use the bouncer and goalkeeper wisely
Transition: React quickly when possession is lost
Scanning: Read the next pass before receiving
Decision-Making: Choose when to switch, play forward, or recycl
