Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition: 

  • Set up within the space of the entire areas you are using to transition into a game at the end. 
  • Bring the principles from the game into the 2 sided game at the end (2/3 touch maximum, movement to create a passing lane for a team mate).

Technical: Short Passing

Adaptations: 

1. Paired players - pass to single player.

2. Paired player making pass returns to back of line. 

3. Single player controls and passes to next partner in rotation.  

4.**Scan - Out and Back** 

5. Single player stays on their cone.  

Layout and Transition: 

  • Area for largest area for practice (Small Sided Game) set out first 40m / 35m 
  • Transition through the 'Technical', 'Skill', and Small Sided Game' phase of the practice included in the pre-practice set up. 
Mechanics: Passing:

1. Look At Target 

2. Eye On The Ball 

3. Angle Of Approach

4. Non-Kicking Foot alongside ball in a comfortable position

5. Strike Centre of the ball with inside/outside of foot (identified area of ball)

6. Firm/Strong ankle.

7. Follow through towards target. 

Progressions: Scanning, Single Touch & Movement. 

Scanning Mechanics: Pass and Receive Phases. 

1. Lift your head - after pass completion. 

2. Check your shoulders - to see what is happening behind you. 

3. Analyse your surroundings - where is your teammate?

4. Make A Decision - move to the open side of your team mate.

Single Touch Passing 

  • Use the 'passing mechanics' but remove the 'receive phase' of the pass
Demonstrations: Receive & Scanning

Receiving: Open Body and angle of foot - Scanning: Shoulder Check and Decision. 

Communication: Key Language. 

'Open Body' -  'Angle Of Approach' - 'Firm Ankle' 'Follow Through' - 'Instep' - 'Scan' - 'Movement' 

Challenges, Conditions, Targets: 

  • Introduce a 'target' for players to complete 15 passes within 1 minute. 
  • Set a 'challenge' zone of how many passes players can complete in 1 minute.
  • Set a 'condition' that every has 1 minute as the on a cone individually. 
  • Realism: Distance.

    Ensure distances are correct. Players are required to control the ball within their immediate space to play a pass 8-10 metres. We are trying to avoid players pushing the ball out of their feet feet which will reduce the distance of the pass.

    Progression 3/4:

    Adaptations:

    1. Paired players - pass to single player.

    Mechanics: Lofted Passing.

    1. Look At Target.

    2. Eye On The Ball.

    3. Wider Angle Of Approach.

    4. Select Surface to be used - consider distance of pass. 

    5. Strike Bottom of the ball.

    6. Height - lean back slightly.

    Progressions: Long Pass, Curled Pass, Volley Pass. 

    • Curled Pass: 1. Strike across the ball with inside or outside of the foot. 2. Strike middle-bottom of the ball. 
    • Volley Pass: 1. Select surface to be used - consider distance of pass. 2. Strike middle-bottom of the ball.
    Regressions: Close The Distance Variations.
    • Close The Distance 1/2: Regress to the extended passing distance attempting the same mechanics used to execute a lofted ball. 
    • Close The Distance 2/2: Enable player to close the distance by running with the ball (with their heads up) before executing an extended pass along the ground. 
    Demonstrations: Angle Of Approach & Area To Strike Ball. 
    • Show players the change in 'Angle of Approach' when executing a lofted pass.
    • Show players the desired Area to Strike the ball (middle-bottom) to lift the ball off the ground.  
    Communication: Key Phrases

    'Angle Of Approach' - 'Lean Back' - 'Bottom Of Ball' - **General phrases of affirmation, support and encouragement**.

    Adaptations: 

    1. 2 possession teams and 1 pressing team (highlighted team in central zone of practice layout). 

    2. Possession teams make 5 passes and attempt to switch the ball over the remaining players inside the central zone.  

    3. Team in the middle send 2 players acting as 'pressers' to attempt to win the ball back before the team with the ball complete their passes and switch the play over to the other team. 

    4. Should the pressing team win the ball back - they rotate from the middle with the team who lost possession.

    Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

    • Every player to have a touch before the ball gets sent over to to the other team
    • If pressing team wins the ball - both teams do push ups/sit ups
    • Make 5 successful passes and send it to the other team without losing the ball 3 times to move to a small sided game.

    Progressions:

    • Increasing the number of players pressing the ball from the middle
    • Increasing the number of passes/introducing a challenge that every player must get a touch before it is sent over to the other team
    Regressions:
    • Decreasing the number of players pressing the ball to 1 or zero. 

    Realism: 

    1. Players experience game realistic pressure while on the ball. 

    2. Players experience game realistic pressure on decision making in close quarters to maintain possession of the football.
