Playing out of the back 1-4-3-3 Pattern 1

  • Centre Halves drop back to the edge of the 6 yard box to allow them time to take a touch and make the next move.
  • Goalkeeper (GK) decides which of the centre halves to play the ball to.
  • Centre half will play the ball out to the full back on their side. Full back will be encouraged to be positioned high and wide.
  • Full backs have a choice to either play the ball to central midfielder who then plays it to opposing GK or they can dribble to the centre line based on position of defensive players.

Playing out of the back 1-4-3-3 Pattern 2

  • Centre halves split wide outside the 18-yard box and deep near the goal line to try and create space for central midfield (CM) players to receive the ball (if opposing players choose to not mark them, they can receive a pass from GK).
  • Deepest CM will be encouraged to look for space on the top of the box.
  • Once in space, the CM will look to receive the ball from the GK, either on the turn to play the ball to the opposing GK on the half way line, or to the other CM who is open and available to receive a pass.
  • The CM who receives the ball from the GK can also play a first time pass to the full back, who can then drive the ball towards the half way line. The CM can also play a 1-2 with the GK to create more space as the opposing players look to press the GK, this should also bring the centre halves into play as well.
