Small - Sided Game - General Practice in Defending the Final Third

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
If the ball goes to a BLUE wide player the RED FB's are to show the player wide and outside and not to allow the pass inside.
When the BLUES have it in the wide area the REDS must stop the cross if possible.FB's are to be coached in blocking any cutbacks and crosses into the Final Third.
The REDS to work as a Unit with the CEN DEF and FB's working together to block,stop and narrow all angles to prevent the ball getting into the Final Third.
The REDS are to put their 'body on the line' and be prepared to make last ditch tackles to STOP all crosses coming in.Be BRAVE.
Challenges,Conditions & Targets:
- The session is conditioned with marked cones donating the Final Third zones.
- The REDS are challenged by having one less player,this is to encourage the BLUE team to have more possession and reach the Final Third regularly,therefore testing the REDS in their defending.
- BLUES (opposition) are to be awarded 3 points for a goal.
- REDS are awarde 5 points for a goal.
- Target for the REDS = 3 points awarded if they STOP the BLUES getting into the Final Third for 5 MINUTE.
- The last BLOCK I will introduce another RED player to even things out.
- Challenge for the BLUES is to 'break lines through the middle' and score..5 points awarded.Scoring with a header 5 points.

FAW / UEFA B - General Session - Defending the Final Third
Mode: Small - Sided Game
Welsh Way Principles:
Understand how to effectively defend the Final Third (out of possession).
Organisation & Area Size:
70yd x 50yd full pitch area - 20yd x 50yd Final Third areas.
RED team is 6 + 1 Keeper
BLUE team is 7 + 1 Keeper
REDS = 4x1x1
BLUE = 3x3x1
Play = 3 x 15 minute periods with two 2 minute breaks.
Explanation & How:
Coach will be coaching the RED team in defending the Final Third.The BLUE team will be attacking the Final Third and will adopt the defensive principles of defending when they lose position.This is important to keep the realism of the session.
Coach will explain the defensive principles of defending the Final Third,remaining compact,protect the Fianl Third,prevent the ball being crossed in and blocking crosses.
To encourage the BLUE team to attack the Final Third I have set them up as a 3 x 3 x 1 with a keeper.It is more important that the BLUE team have the ball longer so I can coach my RED team in the defensive principles.
There will be times when the BLUES lose possession and REDS will be in transition,I will encourage the RED team to attack the Final Third quickly and with the In Possession principles of attacking the Final Third.
To enable this practice to work for me I have set the REDS up as 4 x 1 x 1..When REDS gain possession I will expect 1 or 2 of the defensive players to join in the attack.
The BLUES are to be managed to make the pitch BIG and WIDE,this will encourage them to play fast attacking football and getting into the Final Third as quickly as possible.
BLUES will be encouraged to use the extra player in an overload to test the REDS.
Play starts with the BLUE keeper who will deliver the ball out to the FB.
The REDS will initially try to protect the middle third with one of the RED defenders moving forward to MID to help protect.As Cen Midfielders they will stay compact in the middle and not allow any split passes between them if possible.
