skilled shooting session
Layout-
15 mins working in blocks of 4mins
18 yard box
1 goal
4 cones
spare balls by coach 1
players line up in groups of 6 behind cones outside of the 18 yard box but on the goal line.
Aim
1.coach 1 blows a whistle and feeds a ball to the edge of the 18 yard box 1 red and 1 blue player race to the red cone before getting to the ball before the other player they must go around the cone first.
2.both players must get to the ball first and get their shoot off.
3 . coach can switch blue and red teams over so that they can work on left & right shoots as well.
4.1 coach behind the goal area to watch technique and the other coach feeds the ball in and can see the approach to the ball.
5.coaches must be positive but stop and start session if no success in goals, look to make it easier or harder.
6.at the end of the 1st 4 mins hold interventions with group (what's going well and what needs to be worked on, are the mechanics right? at this point change the teams over.
Mechanics
1.aproach to ball
2. non striking foot close to ball
3.arms out for balance
4.head over ball.
5.what part of the foot is going to connect with the ball (laces, instep, etc)
6.look up and strike ball.
7.follow through with the kick
8.body angle and foot position will determine the direction of the ball.
(Progressions & Regressions):
1.progress it to 2v2
2.keeper starts with the ball and send it up high, players deal with bounce etc.
3.make the distance longer to run (physically tire players out)
4.coach 1 to change what feeding ball they get.
5.coach allows 1 player to go earlier than the other (this can create an unfair game but will show coach how the player will react) psychological approach.
1.making shooting distance closer
2.change it up so that when both players go for the ball who ever touches it first gets a shoot un opposed.
3.the coach could send in 2 balls allowing 2 shoots from the players making it easier but harder for the keeper.
ensure that coach is clear with communication, is it realistic for the players, do we need to slow it down and give one on interventions ? can we make it fun when setting targets and conditions.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
1.make it fun
2.first team to score 5 goals losing team gets a forfeit.
3.can we challenge players to use not preferred foot by awarding more goals if shoot is on target.
4.can we add different shoot choices in for the player and bouncing ball (could mean a volley)
5.can we get the players to encourage their team even when missing.
6.each player gets a penalty at the end of the 5 goals

cones
bibs 6 red 6 blue
Mechanics
1.body in position to strike the ball
2.angle body towards the ball
3.non kicking foot by the side of the ball on approach of swing
4.head over ball.
5.connect foot with ball
6.use arms to steady body position
7.follow through kicking foot to maximize power.
Technical practice
15 mins total time, 3 blocks of 4 mins to allow for interventions and demos
2 lines of players behind red cones working om right and left footed shoots
ensure that both groups understand the mechanics first and ensure that players work off both feet.
coaches lined up on opposite sides with spare balls to ensure flow of practice, coach 1 plays ball into blue players having a touch and shooting before they enter the 18 yard box. coach 2 plays ball exactly the same into red players. 1 red shoots the a blue shoots and they keep swapping.
at the end of the 1st 4 mins hold intervention to show a demo or talk about what is going well and what needs to be worked on before going into the 2nd 4mins which players will switch over so that they can work on their less preferred foot.
coaching points
ensure that the coach give feedback but try to ensure that its specific to the player (great shoot Robbie, really good use of the laces on your right foot, try not to lean back when striking the ball)
coach needs to be positive with their communication but stop the session if success is not quite there and complete the mechanics process again.
coach needs to be close so that they can observe and feedback.
try not to pick players out but if you do be positive and ask that was good but it could be better if you did this and make them rehearse it a few times.
(Progressions & Regressions):
1.only allow one touch and fire
2. let the players drill inside the area of the 18 yard box and shoot
3.allow different shoots, coach could add volleys etc
4.have the coaches behind the goal feeding players to make a 1 touch shoot
5.add small targets in the goal for players to go for.
6.reduce the goal size if you have littler ones available.
1.reduce shooting distance to make it easier
2. pull in more interventions and demos
3.keeper only allowed in his 6 yard box
4.let players shoot from a standing position rather running on to the ball
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
1.if we hit the target 1 point, if we score 1 point
2.2 points if we use our less preferred foot and score
3.can we give the players forfeits if they miss and the same for the keeper.
4.1st team to score six wins
5.volleys class as extras
