Last weekend we fought like warriors in our 3 games and in the end fatigue got the better of us. I want to see the fighting spirit you displayed last week with a renewed emphasis on technical improvement across the board but especially in the quality of our first touch and the accuracy of our passing!
We play our foundational 1-4-2-3-1 for this game. We will consider going to a a 1-3-5-2 if we are down later in the 2nd half as it gives us more midfield depth to win possession and an additional attacker up top to combine and progress the ball forward.
Subs will happen more frequently this week to help keep us fresh and ensure maximum energy when we are out on the field!
We welcome Manny, Dylan and Mun to join us as guest players this weekend!

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
ALL THREE UNITS (Defense, midfield & attack) must be actively engaged in our defensive effort! Our defensive priorities remain pretty much the same as our technical focus this week is when we are in possession of the ball!
TOP PRIORITIES:
1) REMAIN COMPACT AND CONNECTED AS A UNIT
2) CLICK MOMENTS - LOSING THE BALL = IMMEDIATE REACTION
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DEFENDERS
*- Center Backs especially must stay connected to each other so we do not have massive gaps between us to be taken advantage of centrally.
*- Defend centrally first. Defend narrow and compact and if we must yield any ground, yield the ground in the wide areas.
#2 & #3 stay narrow and communicate with #7 & #11 to maintain the connection in front of them.
*- we must STOP the ROUND BALL going in the WHITE STRINGY THING (goal)! - ALWAYS the first priority!!
* DO NOT allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide! (Zone 14 - we'll learn more about this in future)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MIDFIELDERS
**When we lose the ball, how quickly do we mentally and physically transition into a defensive mindset and position? CLICK MOMENTS!
- We must apply pressure on the player with the ball
- We must delay and recover behind the ball in an organized fashion denying easy penetrating balls through our lines
*-#6 & #8 stay central as much as possible and in playing distance of each other.
When we win the ball back, can we find open players (even if that means going backwards for the purpose of recycling the ball and starting the attack again)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ATTACKERS
#7 & #11 starting position when out of position is very narrow to make the center of the field congested.
#9 - Your primary role is to stay connected with your other midfielders and do EVERYTHING in your power to cut the pitch in half when out of possession. Stop the opposition from switching the field with the pass.
If the #9 makes a decision to press hard from the front, all the attackers and midfielders must match the intensity to take away passing lanes and try to win the ball high up the field.
DEFENDING SET PIECES
ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES - Our set pieces are a priority; make genuine efforts to win the ball first in defending situations.
Recognize mismatches, recognize strongest players, shape of the wall (tallest players in the direct shooting line, etc, etc). Man to man on corners. High on the 18 yd line for free kicks (TRACK RUNNERS!!!!)
WIN THE PHYSICAL BATTLE!!!
DEFEND IN THE 1ST PHASE, 2ND PHASE, 3RD PHASE AND BEYOND - DO NOT BE A BALL WATCHER AND LOSE TRACK OF YOUR OPPONENT!!

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
1. PRIMARY FOCUS AS A GROUP IS HOW WELL WE SHOW TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENT WHEN IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL
2. CAN WE FIND/CREATE OPENINGS!
THIS IS A PRIORITY FOR THE ENTIRE TEAM AS ALL THE MOVEMENTS GO TOGETHER TO HELP US GET OUT AND FORWARD UP THE FIELD
OUR MANTRA: GET IT, GIVE IT, GO!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DEFENDERS
-- GK can be a key connecter from one side of the field to the other side of the field.
Key Ideas for us:
-- Push up higher on long goal kicks or punts to allow us to regain possession higher up the field. Mark generally kicks the ball to the 30+ yd line so our back line can set up around 25+ yd line.
- DO NOT pass the ball straight down the middle to a marked midfielder right in front of our goal
*GK ROLE:
We will continue to practice building out from the back. If we get pressed to death then we will consider going longer with the ball on goal kicks. See diagram for how to make sure we compact to one side of the field to increase our chances of retaining possession of the ball on goal kicks.
*Be conservative with ball distribution
*Punch aerial balls in the box whenever possible!
BE PATIENT: DON'T RELEASE THE BALL TOO QUICKLY
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MIDFIELDERS
**Look for combinations in dangerous areas(attacking third) of the field to progress the ball forward
** Focus is going to be VERY HEAVY on our technical improvement:
1. THE QUALITY OF OUR FIRST TOUCH?
-can we recognize where the defensive pressure is coming from?
- do we recognize where the open space is to play the ball into?
- can we head in the direction we want to pass with our first touch?
- Does our first touch set us up for the pass we want to make next?
- Spatial awareness - do we know the space we have and how to use it effectively
** The QUALITY & DIRECTION of your first touch really sets the stage for maintaining possession.
2. THE QUALITY OF OUR PASSING?
- How accurate is our passing? do we play the ball to the correct foot of the receiving player?
- Is the weight of the pass correct to either lead them into space or give them the best chance to get a quality first touch when receiving?
- can we use different surfaces of the foot to give disguise to our passes and keep the defenders off balance?
- can we manage the balance between short accurate passing and longer range passing to switch the point of attack?
3. HOW MANY TOUCHES IS OPTIMAL TO IMPROVE OUR POSSESSION PLAY?
- Is it one touch, two touch, three touch or more that is most effective?
- can we read the game in deciding how many touches is optimal?
- can we pass more than we dribble?
- Reduce the number of touches to increase the speed of play
GET IT --- GIVE IT ---- GO
**Basic possession principles - of body shape when receiving the ball, receive with further foot, communication, accuracy and weight of our passing to find a teammate.
