MDG

Organisation/Conditions

Just under half pitch.

2 vs 2 in both shaded areas which are the same size as 18 yard box.

Wide players are neutral (blacks) and play for both teams although must stay in non-shaded areas.

3 teams of 2 (Blues, Reds and Greens) who all play as Centre Backs or Strikers.

To begin with (as picture shows) ball starts with GK who throws out to either FB and Blues attack Green defenders.

If Blue strikers score a goal, they now attack opposite goal against Red defenders. If Reds don't concede they now become Strikers and attack Greens while the Blues will become centre backs for the next but one attack etc.

(CBs will often attack crosses in match and Strikers get used to defend corners therefore all players practising different positions).

Ball is live until goal is scored or ball goes dead or coach says.

Targets/Challenges

Targets - Goals scored as normal

Challenges - Can the goal come directly from a cross?

Key Points

Can FB and Winger play a combination or movement to create a cross (Overlap, underlap, 1-2 pass, come short to go long)

FB crosses ball into box - can he vary the cross, front post, back post, lofted, along the floor etc

STs need to work on movement, 1 front post, 1 back post, switch overs and communication is needed

Once the session progresses, can the opposite winger who is not crossing attack the back post to create a 3 vs 2 situation in the box

Key attacking principles

Angles and distances of support

Quality of pass (cross)

Width and Depth

Decision Making

Movement to receive and support play (both the strikers and wide players)

Body position and first touch

Organisatrion/Conditions

9 vs 9

Red team plays 1-3-3-2

Blue team plays 1-2-3-3

Two thirds of pitch.

Targets/Challenges

Red team - Try to score a goal directly from a cross. Can they try to re-create MDG situations and use overlap, underlap etc to cross the ball into box and create goal scoring opportunities.

3 goals for link up play between FB and winger which results in goal.

2 goals for a goal which comes from a cross.

1 goal for any normal goal scored not from a cross

Blue team - Try to defend and press as quickly as possible

15 seconds to score a goal if possesion is won

Same rules apply for goals if they come from a cross etc however the emphasis/coaching is with the Red team.

Key Points

Can possession be switched quickly so that defending team cannot set up properly, leaving space for a 2 vs 1 situation

Can STs be used to link up play between FB and winger, offering an angle and option

Can FB support winger to create overload?

Does other FB stay and defend to ensure cover/balance?

Does opposite winger attack back post?

Progression - Blues change to 3 at the back (1332) to challenge the Red strikers
