Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Circle Rondo

Circle Rondo (30 mins)

Group Rondo

Conditions:

- 2 Defenders in the middle of the circle

- The player who gives away possession, plus the player who passed him the ball becomes the defenders.

- Game is to be played at a high tempo

Pass-Turn-Pass Relay (30 mins)

Preparation:

Group of four players in an area of 20x20 yds with a mannequin.

Description:

Player A passes to player B, B performs a turn of the coach`s choice (i.e. back foot,outside of foot or free choiceof the player).

Following his turn player B passes to player C. C controls the ball and passes into player A who has taken player B`s place. The routine is repeated.

Coaching points:

The coach should watch and appraise the approach to the ball by the receiving player and encourage early choice of the type of turn he performs. Players must exhibit quick feet to manipulate the ball for correct placement.

Increase speed as confidence and skill levels permit.

Turn & Shoot (30 mins)

Preparation:

Six or more players in an area made up of half of 9v9 pitch including the penalty area with two mannequins and two cones.

Description:

Player A passes diagonally to player B who turns and shoots. Player A replaces player B. B joins the line. Player C repeats by passing to player D.

Mannequins are used to mimic defenders and for the players to manoeuvre around.

Coaching points:

Allow a maximum of three touches progressing to two touch (turn and shoot) as skills levels improve and permit. In a match situation in and around the penalty area is the most crowded part of the pitch - so the speed and efficiency of a player`s turn is crucial to success in this area.

Receiving & Turning (30 mins)

Practice Organisation:

- 13 players (incl. 2GK`s) arranged 2v1 in each end third & 3v3 in the mid third.

- Objective of the game is for the team in possession to play from end to end, through MF, to get ball to opposite GK to score.

-Pitch is divided into thirds

-IP: Players are allowed to move into any zone

-OP: Players are locked into their own area and must retreat into it if their team lose possession

Emphasis on Receiving & Turning.

Coaching points:

- Early & appropriate selection of turning techniques to either keep possession or counter attack quickly.

- Maintaining team shape (i.e. numbers/ratio in zones).

- Offering support if a player cannot or chooses not to turn immediately (establishing controlled possession).
