Key Factors
Having established the attacking team shape - and some of the passing options available - in the minds of the players, we now look to put this into practice via an SSG.
However, the focus of the session is to emphasise the role of the CAM as a key playmaker
Organisation
2/3 length pitch, full width in attacking half for Red but tapered in their defensive half.
9v9 with Reds lining up in 1-2-2-3-1 (i.e. 4-2-3-1 without the FB's). Blues line up in a 1-4-2-2 (i.e. 4-4-2 without wingers)
No corner-kicks or throw ins - ball stars from keeper each time and aim is to score in opponent's goals
Conditions
If Blues win possession, they have 10 seconds in which to score
For Reds to score No. 10 must touch the ball at least once in the move in the final third (i.e. beyond the red line.)
Coaching Points
- For No 10
- work between the lines and in the channels - in the so-called "half-spaces"
- open body shape
- good first touch and look to play forward or wide where possible
- For Team
- width & depth
- Wingers and striker to look to make forward runs
- Can DM's make forward runs from deep?

Drill (10 mins)
Key Factors
Simple drill to explain the typical shape of the 4-2-3-1 formation and the importance of the CAM (so-called "No. 10") role in this shape
Organisation
The two defending midfielders act as servers and vary the recipient of the first pass.
They then join the play and the players combine to score
As an unopposed drill, we are mainly dealing with cognitive learning; visualising the team shape and passing channels available
Coaching Points
Team shape - width & depth
Individuals - open body position
- good first touch
- Player movement; rotation of midfield (to invert triangle from 2+1 to 1+2) , striker and wingers (to vary angles)
