SSG Theme: To Maintain Principles of Breaking-The-Lines in a Match Scenerio.
Setup:
- Area: 60x45 Yards.
- Teams: 9v9
- Blue Team: Must focus on breaking lines through central areas or wide rotations.
- Red Team: Must stay compact and try to counter as quickly as they can once winning possession.
SSG Conditions:
- All goals for the blue team are worth double points when breaking the line through a pass.
- Free Play.
Coaching Observations:
- Watch for CMs body shape & positioning to receive the ball between the lines.
- Striker Movement for example is my striker dropping into the pocket dragging CBs out with him to create space for CAMs to run into.
- Wide players can they stretch the pitch to isolate FBs and support quick switches.
- Final third decision making, can we recognise when to play forward and when to recycle to ball to keep possession.
Warm Down & Reflections:
- Warm down (5 mins).
- Reflections with squad, at what moments where we successful in breaking the line? Where could we have been better? Did they understand the information?

Specific Practice (20 mins)
Coaching a 433 attacking set up vs a 4231 defensive shape, with the emphasis on Breaking Lines in the Final Third.
Session Objectives:
- Coach players in a 433 to break defensive & midfield lines of a compact 4231.
- We will focus on 3rd man runs, positional rotations, and timings of movements.
Setup:
- Area: 45x35 yards.
- Zones: Divide into 3 zones, build up zone (1), midfield zone (2)& attacking zone (3).
- Equipment: Balls, Cones, x2 Mini Goals & Bibs.
Teams: Blues Vs Reds
Blues: Attacking Team GK-4-3-3
Reds: Defending team GK-4-2-3-1
*For the purpose of the specific practice Blues GK & x2 FBs will sit out& Reds x2 Wingers & Striker will sit out*
Conditions & Rules:
- Attack starts from the back line (CBs & No.6).
- Aim: Progress through the thirds by breaking-the-lines / third man combinations.
- Once the ball enters the final third, look for a through ball or a switch to finish in the goal.
- Defensive team aims to remain compact, pressing only in designated zones(will adjust if too easy).
Key Coaching Points:
- Scanning &Body Shape: Midfielders can you receive on the half turn & look to playforward.
- Third-Man Runs: CM / Wide players to make runs on outside shoulder of defensive team, whilst another player looks to receive and play through the line.
- Positioning: 6 drops to receive from CBs, 8/10 staggered to find pockets behind the 2 DM blocks of the 4231.
- Tempo: Recognise when to play slowly & when to up the tempo to break the line quickly.
- Communication & Triggers: Movement of Striker or wide player pulls defenders to create gaps.
Progressions:
1. Allow defenders to press higher once line is broken.
2. Add transition for defending team, so if they win the ball back they can score in mini-goals.
3. Limit time or touches of CMs to encourage quicker decision making.
