Integrated Warm Up - Combine & Finish (20 mins)

Integrated Warmup - Combination with Finishing:

Set up cones as shown in the image, at both ends of the field with 1 Goalkeeper in goal. Competition, Yellows vs Reds. Players to use the passing sequence before receiving the ball in the shaded area outside the penalty box. Strikers have only 2 touches (one to control the ball and the other to shoot) and the ball must stay inside the shaded area when shooting, otherwise, the goal doesn't count. After striker shoots he must complete agility circuit as shown above.

Station A - Figure 8

Station B - 2 in/ 2 out

PROGRESSIONS:

One Touch finish

Change movements at Station A & B.

Introduce a defender

KEY MESSAGES/POINTS:

-Quality of delivery

When in wide areas, players should focus on crosses or passes that have the right weight, accuracy and timing to allow the striker to finish on goal.

-Be clinical

Around the box, players should take limited touches to strike quickly whilst the Goalkeeper isn't ready, whilst concentrating on their shot selection such as driven or placement shots depending on their position when receiving the ball.

-Movement

Passing players should use creative movement away from the mannequins to receive and pass whilst the strikers need to be aggressive, to attack the ball and shoot on goal.

Technical_Combination Play (15 mins)

Combination Play - Receiving to Play Forward:

  • Setup as shown above:  4 squares. Two teams. Reds play with Reds, Yellows play with yellows. One ball  2 central players and 2 target players on each team.
  • Play starts with yellow outside player, makes a passing to the closest inside yellow. Once ball is played inside, the two yellow players must combine via a diagonal pass, and then end with a pass to the second outside yellow, who then passes to the outside red directly who is besides him. Now the reds look to play through with same combination play rules.

PROGRESSIONS:

  • Team that does not have possession of the ball - two central players should look to get in the way of the pass to promote awareness and sharp movement off the ball.
  • Add defenders in certain zones to apply pressure. Each defender has to stay in there respective zone (horizontal channel). If the defending team wins the ball and can pass the ball to any of their teammates on the outside (either end) they score. Team with possession of the ball score if they can get the ball from end player to the other end player with diagonal passing thru the middle.

KEY MESSAGES/POINTS:

  • Movement off the ball to create passing lane
  • Look to receive to play forward
  • Quality first touch
  • Awareness - find your target players

SSG - Combination Play with Counter Press:

Setup as shown in the image above: 2 teams of 4 players + floater (white) who plays for team in possession. one middle line (3 large yellow cones). 2 goalkeepers.

The play begins with the pass from the coach to the attacking team (yellows). Yellow look to combine and score (at least 3 passes before they can shoot). Defending players (reds) look to quickly regain possession and counter attack the other way. Once they break the red line, the opposite team cannot follow them and they have 4 seconds to counter and score.

Timing of runs on the counter - red line is active offside line.

PROGRESSIONS:

- Allow 1 recovering defender to attempt to stop the counter.

- Manipulate overload

KEY MESSAGES/POINTS:

- Speed of play

- Players should look to play accurate and weighted passes quickly in order to combine and penetrate in the attacking 1/2 to create goal scoring opportunities.

 - Different combinations

- Team in possession to use wall passes, penetrating passes, 1-2's, overlaps, underlaps and switches of play to combine.

- Width and depth to make pitch big

- In possession, the team need movement and shape to unbalance the opposition and link up to combine, with support around, ahead and behind the ball.

- Use LFC role models

- Use LFC values
