Sister session showing the overlapping full back. Uses the diamond routines to bed in (can also revise the one coached last session). Finishes with a longer conditioned game, rather than a GRP where several players not involved, where we look for coaching opportunities especially to recognise the phases, and the chances to play the wide man in rather than going direct. Pass length limited to 20m to force the extra pass rather than the direct approach.

Now add 2 defenders and an 11.
CB marks 9, and FB marks 7. Both playing as 1st defender.
Target or reds is for goals to count 7 must make the final pass/cross into the box - NOT run with it himself. And make 1 of the 3 final balls
Points to note here are about timing of runs and passing angles:
If 7 gets to point C early then 10 can make his pass from point A OR 9 can make it from the edge of the box. However 7 must receive in an onside position.
11 should not get ahead of the ball and maintain width until last moment.
Rotate as previously but with 9>11 and 11>q
Progress by adding a 3rd red defender and another blue midfielder.

Play 8 (plus feeder F) v 6 (plus 2 targets S)
Feed alternate sides.
Reds attempt to get 2 or 3 into crossing positions and then for them to deliver
Blues attempt to win ball and play up to targets S who must stay long and not defend or intercept passes.
Blues must not defend too deep ie edge of D.

Attacking team reds 4-2-3 (4-2-3-1)
Defending team blues 3-3-1 (3-3-2)
Conditions
1. Must get FB fwd to deliver final ball.
2. No passes longer than 20m
3. Strikers must stay long.
4. CBs play in own half
*maintining width on both sides when in possession
*striker movement and timing
*weight and accuracy of passes
*wide player responsibility when full back forward
Look for situations for stoppages when diamond evident and when passing angles too flat OR when full back/winger is too narrow.
Progress by allowing winger or full back to deliver final ball.

Diamond overlap
This pattern allows the full back 2 to overlap and deliver one of the 3 final balls:
1. Near post - striker
2. Cut back - midfielder
3. Back post/shot - opposite wide player.
Point out the phases of play here Phase 1 sets up the pass into the full back.
Phase 2 is the real attacking move.
Starting positions as above - striker at head of the diamond but starts central.
Move initiated by the wide player 7 checking out and then dropping deeper and inside to receive pass from full back 2, who then overlaps.
At same time 10 deepens ready to receive the set from 7 and 9 shows for the long pass.
10 opens body and plays long to 9 from point A. 10 then moves to receive 9s set for the final pass to the overlaping 2 rom point B.
NOTE - 7 is now the deepest player providing support for the other 3.
*movement of 2 to check in and out to make space for overlap
*timing of runs to meet passes
*body position to recieve and play forward rather than turn on the ball
*recognition of overall balance as play moves forward
Rotation, 2>7, 7>10, 10>9, 9>q, new player>2
