Description

7 v 7 playout from the back

Most teams we play against employ 2 x CB's and as such the passing pattern and formation of opposition teams is usually very similar.

This session / document aims to provide visuals and patterns on playing out of our defensive 3rd as a structured unit, starting with the GK.

7 v 7 - GK Start Play

Start Play
  • GK starts play with either the CB or DM to one side of 18-yard box.
  • Wide Midfielders (WM) start high and wide as possible
  • CM comes deep to the D of 18-yard box
  • ST must stay high - this is critical
  • Depending how high opposition press is CB's may need to start closer to their own defensive byline

7 v 7 - CB Receives Ball

Transition Defense to Attack - Defensive 3rd

  • Once ball is played to a CB or DM by GK, the team now needs to start the transition from defense to attack.
  • In this example the ball is played to the CB.
  • The first thing the CB has to do is get their head up to determine if they have space.  If there is space, we want the CB to take that space forward by dribbling and drawing in the first defender of the opposition team.  We don't want CB taking the space wide as we have WM there and we don't want to crowd that space and make it too easy to defend.
  • Once the GK plays to a CB the WM on that side of the field will drop deeper to support the CB / playing out phase.
  •  The CM needs to come across, however it is important he is available to support and not crowd the space of the CB on the ball. The white shaded area shows the central space the CM must stay within to not crowd one side of pitch.
  • The DM and WM on opposite side to what ball was played can now start to move laterally across the pitch. I have shown a Red Line to indicate half of the pitch.  The DM and WM in this build up cannot move over this halfway line.

Transition Defense to Attack - Defensive 3rd

  • Here we can see the CB has taken the space forward
  • The WM has come down to support
  • The CM has move over a little bit to support but has stayed central and is not crowding the space around the CB
  • The DM and WM on opposite side of the pitch has also moved across laterally toward central areas.

Other positions

  • GK -  We want our keeper and any young keeper to be comfortable coming out of goals and not just being static. Even if this leads to goals, we don't want them just sitting in center of the goal.
  • The GK has taken up space behind the ball carrier to offer depth support to the ball carrier.  Anywhere around the 6-yard box or just outside is the spot I would like to see the GK in these situations.  This will help us encourage the GK to be comfortable moving around.
  • ST - It is important the ST does not slide too far across the pitch towards touchline to be in the lane of the WM (lane highlighted as a shaded area).  If the WM has space and takes the space the ST will be in the way and once again could provide a situation of crowding that side of the pitch.
  • ST to consider the position of being in the hole.  We want them to be teh highest player on pitch an doffer a potential ball from teh CB straight to the ST.  We don't want the ST coming deep to get teh ball they must stay high.  If the ST drops deep this crreates a a situation that is easy to defend.

7 v 7 - WM attacks space

Transition Defense to Attack - Defensive 3rd

  • WM is now attacking the free space
  • From here we move into the Midfield 3rd
  • CB we want to support the ball carrier by offering depth.
  • The DM and CM are now free to take up spaces to offer support
  • The ST is encouraged to keep high and draw defenders deeper and way from ball carrier
  • The WM on opposite side of the field can stay central until support of DM and CM reaches middle 3rd or he can take up space potentially drawing another deefender towards goal and creating space in teh midfield 3rd

Transition Defense to Attack - Midfield 3rd

  • The boys from this moment are to use their own knowledge and skill as they progress - we will work midfield 3rd and final 3rd decision making in the next few weeks.
  • We encourage players to brave and positive on and off the ball
  • We ask the boys to always give the ball carrier 3 supporting options whilst they are on the ball in the midfield 3rd.  We have the CB, CM & ST all offering an option, whilst the WM has an option of taking space by dribbling and attacking the space.  No decision in this situation is right or wrong...the decision is that of the player.
  • We do not dictate what the ball carriers does in the midfield or attacking 3rd this is the learning phase and we only offer guided support before the game and at half time.  Players will learn more from playing the game and learning from positive decisions and negative decisions their own way

Transition Defense to Attack - Attacking 3rd

  • WM in this example see the run of ST into space and plays the ball to ST.
  • ST through on goal due to a great penetrative run and pass
  • ST finish moves with a shot towards goal
