Key Factors
Building on the lessons in th Function, we now put it into a game situation
- creates a clear opportunity to show to the striker how our goal-scoring potenital is limited if he too often suppors the winger out wide.
Organisation
9v9 game
3/4 pitch which is full-width in one half (the half Reds are attacking) and tapered in their dfensive half.
In Reds attacking half, there is a 15yd "wing channel" on each side.
I am coaching Reds
Reds line up in a 1-3-3-2. In this shape, the two wider players of the Back 3 are wing-backs who can enter
Blues are 1-4-3-1
Both teams aim to score in the large goals - Blues have only 5 passes in which to do so.
There are no corners, only goal-kicks
Offside law applies
Conditions
Reds can enter wing channel at any time but no more than 2 players at a time
When a Red player goes into the channel, the relevant Blue FB can as well
NB The only exception is when a Red striker enters the channel, a 2nd Blue can follow him. (This condition is relevant to this particular team; one of the striker insists on ball-watching and being drawn out wide - limiting his efectiveness.)
Coaching Points
The basics are; Weight & accuracy of passes and the timing of the support run.
If FB makes supporting run, needs to angle it to create suitable angle
If CM supports, he is in an ideal starting position for a simple 1-2 to be played
If Striker supports, he has to angle run, shield ball from CB and act quickly (because of pressure). NB Angle/direction of Striker's pass is important; must not be into path of on-rushing CB as will be easy to defend.

Key Factors
As defensive teams aim to become more compact whilst attacking team look for width, occasions will occur where the defending FB is isolaed in a 2v1 situation involving an opposing wife midfielder and FB or supporting CM or a Striker who has come wide.
It is important to exploit these situations when they occur and consider the differing impact on the attack of the different players offering support to the LM.
Organisation
We have marked out an area that is 15-17yds wide - typically the distance from edge of penalty area to the touchline - and 20-25yds long (the distance from the penalty area to the centre circle).
In the shaded area, we have a LM and an FB.
The aim of the function is for 2 Red players (the LM and one other) to combine in order to play into the coned area beyond the shaded one.
Play starts with the FB every time.
Red CM starts outside area as does Striker although Striker is marked by a CB (NB CB must be further away from shaded area than striker to start with. Gives Striker an initial advantage but CB can follow striker into shaded area.
