Player #4 vacates his/her space to allow #1 to combine with #3. Player #2 supports/covers behind the ball. In general, the the team should look to attack with three players and have one player stay back to provide defensive cover if the ball is lost. The attacking formation essentially becomes a "Y" shape.

Player #3 runs wide away from the ball offering an option higher up the field. Player #1 receives the ball from the GK. His/her first mentality should be to go forward and pass the ball down the line to #4. Player #4 passes the ball back to #1 who provides support in the middle. Player #2 offers support/cover behind the ball.

The goalkeeper rolls the ball to one of the back players (#1 in this example). Player #2 runs to the middle to offer support/cover behind the ball. Player #3 makes a diagonal run towards the ball. Player #4 supports along the line. These movements give the player on the ball three passing options. Also. if the ball is lost the players are in a good position to regain the ball.
