The aim of this exercise is to get defenders defending co-operatively and forcing play in one direction, this would allow us to control attacks.

Organisation

The game starts with red playing a pass into one of the blue defenders, from here the first red defender goes to confront the ball, the blues play 2v1 against the first defender and then 2v1 against the second defender.

Blues score by dribbling over the end line.

Reds aim to win the ball back and counter to the other line.

The aim of this exercise is to take the curved defensive runs we practised before and put them into a game like scenario here.

Organisation

The ball will start with the red CM. When he plays the pass the blue CM and ST can start to recover. The reds are trying to dribble the ball across the end line past the blue FB.

If the blue team win the ball they are trying to play into the goal, replicating a pass in transition forward.

Coaching Points

Can you force play into a teammate?

St: Can you slow down the opposition FB?

Can you press from the blindside?

Cues:

Fb: When the pass is played to the W can you get tight and show him to the touchline?

CM: When play goes live can you bend your run to get goalside of the red CM?

ST: As the FB takes his touch before he plays can you disrupt him? If your teammates are tight with their opposition affect the FB to force a bad pass.

The aim of this phase of play is to give the players practise defending our weak spot, either side of the midfield diamond.

Organisation

The red team is trying to run the ball through the gates either side of the pitch or in the middle. The blue time are trying to score in the unprotected big goal.

The ball will start with a pass from the red CB to the full back or winger.

To begin with have the blue teams forwards starting in narrow positions and then bring in the correct starting position between the CB and FB later in the practice (as seen by the left sided CF).
