Description

These patterns focus on structured build-up starting from the goalkeeper, using coordinated movements between the central midfielder, centre-back, fullback, and winger to progress play through wide areas and create crossing opportunities in the final third.

Pattern 1: Overlap After Central Pocket Combination

The central midfielder (CM) drops toward the defensive line to support the build-up, providing a passing option for the goalkeeper. Upon receiving, the CM bounces the ball to the wide centre-back, helping circulate possession while creating space centrally (the pocket).

As this space opens, the winger moves inside into the pocket to receive between the lines. The wide centre-back plays into the winger in this central position. At the same time, the fullback initiates an overlapping run on the outside.

The winger sets the ball back to the CM, who then plays a through ball into the path of the overlapping fullback.

The fullback delivers a cross into the box, where attacking players finish the action.

Pattern 2: Underlap Through the Channel from Wide Circulation

The CM drops to support the build-up from the goalkeeper and, upon receiving, bounces the ball to the wide centre-back, creating central space (the pocket). After releasing the ball, the CM advances into that space.

The wide centre-back plays into the fullback, who is positioned deeper and ready to receive. The fullback then finds the CM in the pocket.

The CM switches play to the wide winger. By holding width, the winger creates a gap between defenders (the channel).

The fullback makes an underlapping run through the channel. The winger plays a through ball into this space, allowing the fullback to run onto it and deliver a cross into the box for the finish.
