Defending - Body Shape (5 mins)

Method:

  • Attacking players try to run through one of the red gates
  • Defending players (Red) must tag player
  • Max 20 seconds. If player goes outside the pitch the defender wins
  • Keep score

Progression 1: Give the attacker a ball

Progression 2: Make it 2v1 (2 x attackers v 1 defender)

Coaching Points:

  • Defending player must have open body shape, side on
  • Block one gate and force the player towards the opposite gate
  • Quick movement towards player, then slow down & get lower as they get closer
  • The closer the attacker gets to the gate, the closer the defender gets to them
  • Communication - team mates call instructions to players, e.g. "body shape", "show him one side"

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 2 V 2, 3 v 3 (15 min)
Capture Image

2 V 2, 3 v 3 (15 min)

Method:

  • On coaches call, players working in 2's, 3's, 4's etc. holding hands, run around cone then into the center to play 2v2
  • Try score in one of the two goals
  • Coach passes ball into certain area

Note: Vary the place coach pass ball in from and where the players run from/to

Coaching Points:

  • If team that gets ball loose it, they must try to transition to defend
  • Team that is defending puts 'PRESSURE' on ball, must NOT DIVE IN, side on body shape, block pass to other player, show attacker one side.
  • Other defender offers 'COVER'.
  • If playing 3v3, third player offers 'BALANCE' so keeps gap between 'cover' player small
  • Communication between players
  • Attacking players - can they create space - width & depth
